Car overturned on the Expressway

Just highlighting this accident, as it’s just been one after the other this morning, and the same yesterday. Yesterday between Caniço and Santa Cruz 3 accidents happened in the same area, causing delays 3 times during the day.

Its just unbelievable the amount of accidents, and peopke don’t learn or know how to drive when it’s wet, oil comes to the surface and the roads are a nightmare.

This morning another accident at 7.30 caused traffic chaos for 8 km.

A car crashed a moment ago on the Via Rápida, in the Campanário area, towards Funchal-Ribeira Brava.

Apparently, no injuries resulted from this accident, as no corporation was called. The vehicle still has material damage. 

A technical team from Via Litoral is already on site.

Being someone who has been visiting Madeira since 2001, having experienced being among the driving ( but not driving myself ) and owning an HGV Licence I have seen so many incidents that have been split seconds away from what could be terrible accidents, and I am not at all surprised at the number of incidents that occur, and the trips from and to the airport have at times scared the hell out of me.

  2. As a frequent holiday visitor to the Island I’m becoming more and more fearful about hiring a car whilst in Madeira because of so many serious accidents and no apparent solutions being suggested.

  4. Your frustration at the number of road accidents over the New Year is shared by many of us, particularly as they appear to be caused by poor driving practice and driver ignorance of wet weather driving conditions.
    As a retired Michelin technician, I can perhaps offer a little clarity.

    From the first drops of rain, and until there is sufficient time and volume of water to wash the road clean, there is a build-up of a slippery emulsion on the road surface which causes a barrier and loss of grip for the tyres.
    This emulsion is mainly a tyre dust of multiple compounds from tyres wearing down, excess oils dripping on the road from the many automatic lubrication systems on commercial vehicles and of course water. Water is a real challenge to rubber tyres. Remember – to cut rubber with a knife, use water as a lubricant to make the blade slippery.

    Once the emulsion is washed off the road surface, grip is improved but still greatly compromised.
    Tread patterns are designed to penetrate surface water and provide biting edges for grip but braking distances are certainly much greater.
    The contact patch of each tyre is little greater than the sole of your shoe, so the four of them have a lot of work to do and struggle in the wet unless you give them some help by thinking a bit!
