‘Irene’ brings gusts of up to 120 km/h, heavy rain and 5.5 meter waves to Madeira

Mountainous areas and the south coast of the island of Madeira are the areas that are expected to be most affected in the Region.

Wind with gusts of up to 120 km/h in the highlands, periods of heavy rain in the mountainous areas and south coast of the island of Madeira and sea agitation with swells of up to 5.5 meters are the weather forecasts for the Region that will be under the influence of ‘Irene’ depression.

In the Madeira archipelago, there will be periods of rain or showers tomorrow, Tuesday, which will sometimes be heavy, especially on the southern slopes and highlands of the island of Madeira, reported the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), in the latest weather forecast update.

The wind will intensify, blowing from the strong southwest, with gusts of up to 95 km/h, being strong to very strong in the highlands, with gusts of up to 120 km/h.

The increase in sea agitation will also be significant with waves in the western quadrant measuring 4 to 5 meters on the 16th and 17th, temporarily reaching up to 5.5 meters on the south coast of Madeira Island during the 16th.

“In this sense, warnings of Precipitation, Wind and Maritime Unrest have already been issued”, recalls the IPMA, with Civil Protection, the Port Authority of Funchal and the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation also leaving recommendations to the population.
