Santa Cruz calls for more supervision over the driving of rent-a-car employees

Before the atlrticle I’m in total shock that there are 181 car rental companies on the island, where is the control…?????

Before covid we probably had 10-15 companies, só this new number now is totally unbelievable.

The Santa Cruz Parish Council claims to be receiving complaints from residents, passers-by and local businesspeople, denouncing “situations of dangerous driving by several young rent a car employees (drivers), which put their safety and security at risk. life of the population”.

“Failure to comply with the maximum speed within localities, disregard for zebra crossings, duly marked parking areas, speed bumps created precisely so that drivers can reduce their driving speed, dangerous overtaking in areas of low visibility and near residential areas are some of the examples given by the population”, says that local authority in a statement.

As an example, the president of the Parish Council, Paulo Alves, talks about situations narrated by residents who say they were forced to throw themselves onto a plot of land next to the road, otherwise “they would have been run over”.

“As there are currently 181 registered car rental companies in the Region, many of them with cars in spaces close to the airport, there are several situations in which employees of these car rental companies drive at excessive speed on streets such as: Rua São Fernando, Rua do Cano, Estrada Santo António da Serra, Estrada Regional 207 – Behind the Airport, Rua São Sebastião, Rua Fábrica Burnay, Avenida 25 de Junho and exit from the highway to Rua de São Pedro, when traveling to prepare and/or wash cars .”

The same source informs that in light of these warnings from the population and passersby, a meeting was held, at the request of the Parish Council, with the presence of officials from the Santa Cruz City Council and the local Public Security Police, and the concerns were conveyed residents and local businesspeople, as well as the request for greater road inspection in the Parish.

“Thinking about the safety of people, passers-by and even drivers themselves, those responsible for governing the parish of Santa Cruz, call for the awareness of those responsible for rent a car, with cars in the parish of Santa Cruz, so that they take measures with their employees who circulate daily in the parish’s streets, some of them driving dangerously that puts human lives at risk”, he concludes.
