The end of the scooters is in sight – Thankfully

The company that owns the scooters littered around Funchal has gone bankrupt, that are trying to find other partners without much success, so hopefully we will see the end of this in the coming weeks.

  1. I was amazed on a recent two week annual visit these scooters were flying around at considerable speed on and off the pavements and we hardly noticed any rider with a safety helmet on either. Personally don’t think Madeira need them ?‍♂️

  2. Quite the inconsiderate opinion from someone who doesn’t have a need for them. Living on Madeira without a car I heavily relied on them to get around, saving hours of time waiting for busses and a lot less time being squeezed into them as sardines. How some people (teens mostly) drive them is a problem, yes, but it doesn’t take away that it is a quick and convenient way to get around, especially when you live close to Estrada Monumental. They also help reduce traffic, polution and they aren’t as ridicilously loud as some motorcycles people drive. I hope to see a new company offer them soon and if not I’ll be quick to purchase my own.

    Taxis are extortionate
    Buses are packed
    Other countries have and accept them
    We are not moving with the times again
    Just moaning about progress

    1. The problem is not with scooters as such but the way they are ridden — as the previous correspondent said, at speed and often on pavements. They’re a nightmare in London and Madeira certainly doesn’t need them. They are not the answer to packed buses. That points to a need for more buses.

      1. The problem is not, for me, the way they’re ridden. That’s an enforcement issue, and one the police can correct with a crackdown. The real problem is the way they’re left just anywhere, impeding deliveries, wheelchairs, and pedestrians on the pavements.

    2. I completely agree, I keep my M365Pro here and use it all the time

      It’s particularly useful when picking up a hire car from the airport that we use in the days before flying back to the UK

      It’s also great for trips to larger supermarkets, and a great way to explore areas that it would feel intrusive to drive through by car

      Making it more difficult for younger people to travel, when they may not be able to afford cars, taxis, or buses is incredibly selfish

Please don’t tell me you are recommending a child’s toy with 18 inch handle bars, four inch wheels and a high fire risk battery as a safe method of transport when bringing home a weeks shopping from the supermarket. As to young people not being able to afford buses, how many 1.95 tickets does it cost to buy a scooter.

  4. If dedicated lanes on roads and better policing, they are a fabulous alternative to public transport. Getting from Estrada Monumental to Old town for example, is a long walk (especially in the summer ?) and better for the my pocket, the roads & environment than a taxi.

  6. Is it possible to contact the company as I would like to buy one scooter and the charger?
