The tragic death on the high seas left the population in shock and the Carnival Parade cancelled.
This morning, commotion took over the small parish of Seixal, in Porto Moniz. The tragic death of the 71-year-old fisherman, who was found inside a canoe in the sea of São Vicente, shook the entire population.
“It’s a very small parish and of course it hurts everyone. The way he was and the person he is, who is well known here in the parish, he left us all emotional”, says Xavier Castro, president of the Parish Council, who he said that the man in question, who was his neighbor and a person who was “easy to work with” and had connections to many Seixalenses. “He dealt well with farmers, he was a fisherman, that is, he was someone who had relationships with a lot of people. He got along well with the entire parish”, he highlighted.
Due to the tragedy, the Seixal Parish Council decided to cancel the Carnival parade, scheduled for 3pm, according to a note published on Facebook.
“The procession was canceled due to the situation and the way everything happened, but also because you are the father of an employee of our Parish Council. Therefore, the executive understood that it makes no sense to celebrate any festivities at a time like this”, he clarified.
Meanwhile, at 1:30 p.m., the fisherman’s body was picked up by a funeral home van. The Maritime Police took charge of the incident and the body will now be taken from the Seixal pier to the forensic medical office.
The body of the 71-year-old fisherman was found inside a canoe, in the sea of São Vicente. The man was fishing, having apparently been the victim of a sudden illness. He was discovered by a friend who immediately alerted the authorities.
