The ‘sweetest’ king of Madeira Carnival

Tibúrcio Azevedo has reigned at the Madeira Carnival for 30 years. The Mathematics Explainer returns to be the King in the Os Cariocas troupe.

The main reveler of the Madeiran carnival has the particularity of distributing ‘chocolate coins’ only along the route – throwing them into the public. This year will be no exception. He acquired more than 132 kg of ‘sweet coins’, and this Saturday he plans to throw 55 kg between Avenida Sá Carneiro and Praça da Autonomia. The rest are reserved for tomorrow, in the procession taking place in Porto Moniz, and on Monday night, in the carnival parade in Câmara de Lobos.

This is a personal investment, which this year amounted to 1500 euros.

In the DIÁRIO report, the ‘monarch’ Tibúrcio reveals that only in the first two years of his ‘reign’ were ‘snowflakes’ sweets distributed to the public.

The vice-president of the ‘Os Cariocas’ Samba School was already present on the Avenue at 7pm, despite his group this year being the penultimate to enter the parade, certainly after 9pm.
