There are already more than 20 thousand foreigners in the Region

The number of immigrants residing in Madeira soared. ‘Foreigners in the Region already number more than 20 thousand’ is the headline in this Monday’s JM. Venezuela, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy are the countries of origin of the overwhelming majority.

Americans are another nationality looking at the island for a permanent move also.

The number almost reaches 10% of the entire population, but many Madeirans leave as the cost of living has become impossible for then to stay, so many leave to start a new life, often staying with friends and family at first.

  1. Well should count also how many of them try to learn and speak the language since that is half way to integrate in the community instead aspect the Portuguese speak all the time English or other languages no one is oblige to speak all the time with them all time in their languages .

      I did live in UK from 1999 until 2018/19 and even before I did start living there I did speak English and when i did lived their I made a effort to learn more . The big concern in the UK is the other minorities that been living their for long time and other emigrants plus refuges that some of them don’t make a single effort neither to learn the language or even respect the norms and rules plus costumes of the country and live in complete segregation and ghettos and try to impose their culture also. And this will be a big problem not only to the UK but also Portugal that is starting to happen and the rest of the EU they should put in law that anyone that is coming should be oblige to learn the language and if not cant stay was simple was that .

      1. Não acredito que a atual crise no governo da ilha seja resultado de estrangeiros, embora se possa pensar que os “costumes locais” estejam envolvidos.

        Existe um problema em Portugal (e em grande parte da Europa) de saída dos jovens e de envelhecimento da população. O perfil etário dos imigrantes – na Madeira, em particular – pode ser um problema, mas Portugal terá ainda mais dificuldades sem eles.

            I’m talking about Asia countries like India , Pakistan Bangladesh and also other countries that create community ghettos and try to impose their values and believes in the community in the different countries they emigrate and dont make a single effort to learn the language or even to integrate or adapt.

  3. We moved from the US the beginning of 2023 and are enrolling in a 9 month, 2 nights a week class in Portuguese. Many of our friend that have moved here are currently in the class and have been a great help in helping us as we work daily to learn the language. Many of our US friends are already in the class that started in September of 2023 and 10 more are enrolling this September 2024. If you live in a country, it’s just respectful to learn the language and it makes daily living all the richer to converse with our Portuguese neighbors. At least that is how we feel.

      And all the others many thanks for the effort in learning the language and respect the costumes and culture but it is difficult and challenging independent of everything . And I dont have any type problem with people coming in from any country . ??

  5. I am planning my move for 2026 but am taking on line classes here in U.S. to prepare. Will see how it goes sans the daily personal interactions which would help.?

  7. Does madeira have the capability and infrastructure to deal with this
    It could mean deforestation a terrible thing I hope the authorities
    place some kind of order and protection in place.
