Woman run over on Rua da Casa Branca

A woman was run over this evening on the way down from Rua da Casa Branca to Estrada Monumental, in Funchal.

At the moment we don’t have much information, particularly about the victim’s condition, but EMIR, Firefighters Sapadores do Funchal and PSP are on site taking care of the incident.

  1. Only a matter of time have sat on the balcony many times in the hotel in the evening and cars use it as a race track .. you can hear them coming a mile off .. surprised it has not happened more often .. 🙁

  2. It isn’t surprising Tobi to read another report on the blog of a pedestrian being hit by a car in Funchal.
    The behaviour of many motorists vis a vis other road users has deteriorated greatly in the last year or so and the numbers of vehicles and queues of traffic around the island and very evidently on Estrada Monumental have vastly increased.

    Year after year I used to marvel at the courtesy shown by drivers in Madeira to people crossing roads. Their adherence to the regulations regarding stopping at zebra crossings was absolute and if one of them should happen to err, they would acknowledge the person waiting and apologise The primacy of pedestrians approaching zebra crossings was strictly observed and striking. One felt safe.
    No longer.
    Frequently cars do not stop to allow walkers safe passage across the road and when they do, often cars are even driving over the crossing while pedestrians are still walking on it.
    Our city is busy with lots of movement and activity and I fear that it’s only a matter of time before a fatality occurs.
    Bad habits are contagious. Please, can we have some action/ planning/ discussion/ monitoring to address this danger?
