Funchal installs electronic locks in recycling bins to mitigate abusive waste disposal

Starting today, the Environment department of Funchal City Council will implement an electronic lock model on waste disposal containers, intended for the exclusive use of residents without access to door-to-door collection.

According to the councilor responsible for the Environment, Nádia Coelho, “this pilot project consists of the adaptation of three complete recycling bins, that is, containers for the disposal of both recyclable waste and unsorted waste, which will be equipped with this type of lock, ensuring, through a magnetic card, the exclusive disposal of residents who live in streets without access to door-to-door collection, and, on the other hand, restricting access to containers by non-residents, thus mitigating the abusive disposal of waste by third parties, often placed in a disorderly manner and limiting the containerisation capacity, thus increasing the responsibility of users themselves in using it correctly.”

“The versatility of the chosen equipment represents an added value, as it allows it to be adapted to any type of container, and reduces maintenance costs”, he added.

The acquisition of these 12 locks, equipped with opening cards and respective software, involved an investment of more than 7 thousand euros.

The first equipped containers will be placed in Travessa das Voltas, parish of Imaculado Coração de Maria, in Caminho da Fé, São Martinho, and in Travessa da Casa Velha, Santa Maria Maior, serving around 30 homes.

Please note that, with the provision of this equipment and the respective access to a management platform, it will be possible for the Environment department to monitor the use of containers.

“Once the expected success of this pilot project has been verified”, other waste disposal equipment will be adapted in the municipality of Funchal, in recycling bins where there is essentially undue disposal by third parties.
