“Madeira is far from being a healthy land”

The Liberal Initiative (IL) issued a statement this Sunday, in connection with World Health Day, to express its concern regarding what it says is happening in the Region.

IL argues that “Madeirans deserve to know, even if only by estimate, when their consultations, surgeries and diagnostic tests will take place”. However, highlights IL, “this information is unknown, mainly because SESARAM itself is not clear with regard to these agendas”.

  1. While I understand the angst regarding the current public health situation, I think we sometimes also need to take a look at the bigger picture. There is currently a HUGE, NEW State-of-the-art hospital being built on the Island! That represents an investment in the future healthcare situation on the island of over 100 Million Euros. With plans for a medical school after that. While it is almost 3 years away……at least we should be happy that such a big investment is taking place for our future!

    1. And do you really think that’s going to help. ? Having a new hospital isn’t going to reduce waiting lists, it’s down to management , and it’s been a mess for years and years

    Are you suggesting that a new state of the art teaching hospital will do nothing to assist with the healthcare in the region?

    1. Yes, I am. A new facility, new staff, new med students and nurses studying and working for licensure….and….the lure of living on Madeira instead of the mainland will certainly provide significant new opportunities and resources for Madeira! If you can’t see that….then you just might be too jaded to see.

    2. But if you can’t increase staff numbers to run the expanded facility then you will have nice new hospital wings and wards standing empty! Just like in the UK medical staff nurses and doctors need to be paid a decent salary or they simply will look for work elsewhere!

  3. Back in the late 90s, early 2000s there was a TV programme called ‘ Boys and Girls Alone’ where they left a group of children in a house alone and they had to try and live on their own. As you can imagine it was total chaos. Portugal is the nation equivalent.

  4. Agree that a new hospital doesn’t necessarily mean better, more timely care. A new hospital may be needed but improving overall care is in many ways more about improving outpatient services.
    Is there a public document the details the exact nature of the reported 118000 procedures “on hold”. 118000 is a very large number and the specifics re “procedures” would be interesting and informative. Is the issue a lack of diagnostic and procedural facilities, or is it lack of physicians and other skilled healthcare providers. Also, what is the definition of “on hold”? Does it mean just delayed, for how long, or that people have not been given an appointment date.

You cant go blaming the Governmment and Health Board for unhealthy habits of people it is up to people to try improve and diverse their food when preparing using less ready meals and processed food and trying cooking more scratch and not cooking so much meat and fish and alternating with vegetarian dishes and eating more fruit . As far the exercise people need to do a effort and even try to exercise more .

    1. Well that’s ok then because we’re not. We’re blaming them for running the health service like morons. My wife has MS, she still hasn’t had an MRI after 3 years of waiting and that’s only down to sheer incompetence. Every time she goes to an appointment they have no idea who she is or that she had an appointment. It took weeks to get a hep B vaccination because they knackered it all up, they don’t answer the phone if you call. It’s total garbage. That’s not even the half of it. Get someone from a country that knows how to run things well and copy them instead of whatever this mess is. Everyone complains about it and there’s no spark or motivation to improve anything, just plod on and whinge.

    Unfortunately we are all in the same boat I did return back to Portugal in 2018 and did stared living n Sintra village in 29 of July of 2019 and when I left the Heath Centre where I was renting I did request to be transferred to Sintra Health Centre that it is 10 minutes walking and only last month my family was accepted in the Heath Centre without a allocated GP and neither I was informed that I was accepted there it was only by casualty that I discovered and opposite of the UK where I did have my GP . And during all this time being in a waiting list without knowing what position you are I was obliged going in a train 5 stations to see the other Heath Centre .Regretting of returning back no .

    And more beside going in the train 5 stations to go see the the GP many times I was oblige go private .In the previous Heath Centre many times you couldn’t contact them by telephone only by email and when you need appointment they release a date for contact them and book an appointment by email and many times there isn’t any appointments anymore .And the last one if you
    don’t use enough the Heath Centres in Portugal you can be removed and put in a list that later one can affect you trying going to another Health Center
