This video taken this week when there were a couple of cruise ships in.

It must have been awful waiting in this heat.

  2. I was warned by a holiday rep over 30 years ago, when the trip went right into the old town, not to do it unless you had dangerous sport insurance. Never have and don’t see the point of it now.

    2. I agree. Certainly don’t plan to take the teleferique. Trouble is it seems like these mammoth floating hotels are in most days.

  4. What a waste of visiting time queueing like that. I’d rather be soaking up the atmosphere somewhere else on the Island. Why people want to spend their holiday with literally thousands of others in your personal space is beyond me and if I was on Madeira I’d avoid Funchal/Monte if I knew they were arriving.

  5. If I know there is more than one ship in I head for the hills, or the lovely walk to Camara De Lobos. The boats bring in a lot of daily trade to the Funchal area but I’m with Nicky on this one.

  6. Wow, all those people contributing to the local economy. Lovely. Hope the revenue continues when the council makes their visit more expensive to just step off the ship.

    1. Would be interesting to know just how much cruise passengers DO contribute to local economy. Some places – like Venice & Dubrovnik – have concluded the mobs are more trouble than they’re worth

  8. CfD or Cruise free Day. The tourism minister should give it some thought to close the harbour for 2 or 3 days per week. Madeira still belongs to Madeirans.

    1. I would have have thought the Tourism Minister would be trying for more boats rather than less. I don’t see many Madeiran names in the comments calling for less boats.

  9. Having done the experience of the Tobbogan on a couple of occasions (no queues whatsoever), I now settle for a leisurely walk around the beautiful Town of Funchal with a relaxing coffee at the Golden Gate. A lovely experience, thank you Funchal.

  10. The summer months might bring some relief when these ugly monsters will all move to the Mediterranean.

  11. Well been up in the cable-way but going down it was a long walk in a very very steep road and narrow great views .
