Someone really needs to get a grip of where money is spent, and not leave it to thieving politicians. Imagine taking your child or elderly relative to this health center.
The Socialist Party councillor at Calheta City Council today denounced “the state of degradation in which the Paul do Mar health centre is found, with enormous constraints for users, and warns of the urgent need for the Regional Government to move forward with works to requalify this infrastructure”.
According to Sofia Canha, the health center, which operates in a “building in Madeira Nova”, where the Social Security and Parish Council services are also based, is in a “deplorable state”, with problems getting worse day after day, due to a lack of regular maintenance.
As the socialist councillor reports, there is serious rainwater infiltration, which causes damage to the structure of the building, as well as mould and dampness inside, which is not at all recommended for the health of users. In addition, the bathrooms are also in poor condition, with plumbing and sewage problems, to the point that access to them is blocked. In the case of the children’s toilet, it is unusable due to the risk of the tiles continuing to fall.
Added to this is a water leak, years ago, near the meter valve, causing losses and, consequently, high costs in the water bill, which leads Sofia Canha to criticize the inconsistency and irresponsibility of the Executive, taking into account that water saving campaigns are carried out for consumers, but “it is not capable of establishing savings policies in the services under the Government’s supervision”.
The councilor also warns about the state of the skylight – which has never been cleaned and has cracks, through which water and small crawling animals can enter – as well as the lack of parking spaces reserved for users and staff of the health center, since those that were created next to the building are normally occupied by cars of occasional visitors and tourists.
Sofia Canha stresses the urgency of the Regional Government moving forward with the renovation work at the Paul do Mar health centre and criticises the PSD’s inaction and indifference towards this problem. “The PSD was used to denouncing situations under the supervision of the Republic, when the PS was in power, but it is incapable of seeing the failings of the Regional Government’s supervision. It is a case of saying that those who live in glass houses should not throw stones at their neighbours”, she states.
