Crew member rescued from fishing boat stranded in Ribeira Brava due to fire

The crew of the Funchal Lifeguard Station rescued this morning, August 3, a crew member from a fishing vessel, which ran aground due to a fire, in a difficult to access area located between Calhau da Lapa and Ilhéu do Campanário, in the municipality of Ribeira Brava.

According to a note from the National Maritime Authority, following an alert received at 5:57 am, through the crew of the fishing vessel, crew members from the Funchal Lifeguard Station and elements of the local Command of the Funchal Maritime Police were immediately activated to the scene.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the Lifeboat Station crew found that the victim was physically well, without needing medical assistance, and that he had managed to reach a difficult-to-access area, from where they rescued the man to the port of Funchal,” the statement said.

At the site, the expert from the Port Authority of Funchal is carrying out an assessment of possible sources of sea pollution and the conditions for removing the burnt vessel.

The local command of the Funchal Maritime Police took charge of the incident.
