Crowd invaded Pico do Areeiro to see the sunrise (with video)

Hundreds of people, the overwhelming majority of them tourists, went to Pico do Areeiro today to witness the sunrise, once again creating constraints on car traffic.

Most people arrived in the area in rental vehicles, which ended up occupying the entire roadway.

This is totally ridiculous, and I’m glad I don’t have to go to any of these places while this continues.

  2. The problem of traffic blocking access to Pico do Areeiro can easily be solved as both Germany and Spain have managed to do. Access to the following is only available by bus with tickets purchased at the car park.
    1. Eagles Nest, Berchtesgaden, Germany.
    2. Pecos de Europa, Northern Spain.
    Appears to be a very sensible way to solve the problem.

      Car park 10 minutes away, run a bus loop. Charge a minimal amount to offset the cost of running the bus. Free for residents ofcourse.

  6. Put the car park near Poiso and run a shuttle bus (paid, of course). Then the summit would also be accessible to folk using public transport services

  7. I was there and part of the problem. The weather had been bad for the days beforehand and it was the last day of our trip before flying home, we were desperate to see the stunning views that had been ‘hyped’ on social media. With a clear forecast we decided to drive up, there were so many cars it was crazy, and with the lower carpark full there was no choice but to park on a wide section of the road further up to the observatory (where buseses could still pass). To be honest, it would be almost impossible to turn around due to the large number of cars behind us. The views were indeed incredible, but definitely spoiled by it’s popularity with the trail having hundreds of people using it. After watching the sunrise we left to drive back down the mountain, but a tour bus was stuck due to too many cars and the police had to come and help resolve the situation!

    Madeira seems to be geting more and more popular (especially with the 21-30 age bracket) so actions need to be taken to avoid this happening more regularly.
