The City Council, PSP and firefighters will monitor the site and feed some of the animals that were left behind.
No residents are allowed to return home. Some crops were destroyed, but there was no damage to homes.
After days and hours of anguish on several fronts and in several places, the situation has calmed down in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos. The most dramatic case is essentially related to Fajã das Galinhas, a place where the approximately 60 residents still do not have permission to return.
“Nobody has returned to Fajã das Galinhas yet. I have already told people that nobody will be coming in today, because we are going to carry out an assessment”, said Leonel Silva, president of the Câmara-Lobense local authority.
For now, the security conditions will be assessed. “We will send a team – a member of the council, a member of the PSP and a member of the fire department – to scout the area. We will go to Fajã das Galinhas and see how things are”.
“The only critical point at the moment is Fajã das Galinhas, because people have their possessions, they have their animals, but we are taking care of it. We are going there to also give food to the dogs, to feed other animals, and to carry out a survey to see if everything is okay”, summarized Leonel Silva.
DIÁRIO is aware of reports of true terror in Fajã das Galinhas. At a time when the site was under threat of fire, practically surrounding the remote location, there were several rock falls and even several burning eucalyptus trees fell down the hillside. Some agricultural crops were also destroyed, but there was no damage to homes.
While some residents initially resisted leaving their homes, even with an evacuation order, the area is now deserted. Some residents were supported by the Madeira Social Security Institute, while others chose to stay with relatives.
