Tourists ignore warning of closure of hiking trail at Pico do Areeiro

When closing any area, proper signage and warnings must be put in place. Individuals who disregard these warnings will be subject to a fine of 1000 euros.

A simple piece of paper and a few strips of tape will not deter people from entering closed areas. Therefore, warnings and fines must be displayed on proper signage.

Despite the warnings and signs prohibiting access to the Vereda do Areeiro pedestrian trail, which is closed due to the fire, many tourists ignore the barrier that blocks access to the trail.

The information was given to JM, moments ago, by eyewitnesses.

It should be remembered that, this morning, the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation informed that, “as a precaution and for safety reasons”, this would be one of the classified hiking trails that were closed due to the fire.

In addition to Vereda do Areeiro, access to Vereda da Encumeada, Vereda do Urzal and Caminho Real da Encumeada is also closed. Furthermore, the forest path between Eira do Serrado and Areeiro will remain closed.
