Funchal rejected 187 Local Accommodations

Its getting more difficult to get an AL licence in Funchal, especially in Apartments .

Funchal City Council has rejected 187 requests for properties to be used as local accommodation this year. The decision was made to JM by João Rodrigues, councillor for urban planning. Between January and August, the council also cancelled three licences that were in force.

  1. 187 have been rejected out of how many submitted? Only if the ratio is higher than last years we can be saying this is more difficult.

    Or have family that issue the licences
    You will get

    Paying under the table will get you more chance too

  3. It’s good that they are refusing AL in apartment buildings. Most owners of apartments do not want to share their ‘home’ with holidaymakers. They can be loud, disruptive reduce your security not knowing who your neighbours will be from one week to the next. They take over the pool areas and loungers. AL increases rental income which has pushed up prices making it difficult for local residents to find accommodation. Cheap flights and AL are certainly changing Madeira and not in a good way.

    3. I agree, Joyce, but however Al is not cheap for holidays, as you put it, yes, you can still get a cheap flight. 

  4. Pressure from the hotel industry? I wonder how many hotel requests have been cancelled also? I agree there should be a level of AL properties in relation to visitors to the island, after all, not everyone wants to stay in a hotel.

My husband and I always stayed in apartments until the year when we had booked and paid for three weeks, we couldn’t land because of adverse weather for three days, eventually our flight returned to Edinburgh. Jet2 refunded our flight money within 3 days, no money from owner of accommodation. We now do package deals.

  6. Let me ask a question. If you had been the owner of the accomodation, booked in advance, and your guests were unable to take up the booking because of weather conditions, would you have returned their monies? Or would you have thought, of course, they will claim on their insurance?

    1. Nope. I have spoken to people in the past who weren’t charged if they were late arriving because of the weather. It seems some owners are more understanding. We all know how the airport gets affected by the weather.

  7. Thank you for your honesty. I’ve let residential properties and I had to stand by my side of the contract, I thought it only fair tenants should stand by theirs.

  8. Regarding hotel accommodation I have received a note to say from 1st October there is a tourist tax of 2 euros per night per person
