    1. Hi Mike this picture was taken in madeira by myself, I take three pictures and then put them all together to get the panorama.

  5. David, from your comment I assume you first travelled to Madeira a few years ago. My first visit was in the mid 60s, the view shown in the photograph would have been of banana plantations with the odd small house in the centre, no mains drainage, probably no mains water or electricity which to get to you would have travelled along the untarmacked main road. This was when the Old Town was a no go area and the only exports bananas and the Madeiran youth. The few holiday makers joked if you met someone over the age of twenty with a full set of teeth they must be visitors. Both you and I by our visits contributed to what you call the Horrible Costa del Funchal, rather like the early tourists to the Algarve and Balearics. But just think, by our actions we forced Madeira to modernize to what we take for granted back home. Far better to have left it as it was. Ask a local if he would like to revert to the “Good old days.”
