Funchal is already lit up for the Christmas season.
The opening ceremony was enhanced by a fireworks display that delighted the numerous people who fill the city center at this time of year.
This year, the event also featured a new LED screen projecting videos about Madeira, as well as a stage for performances.
Immediately following the opening ceremony, the public will be able to attend a concert by Beatriz Caboz & the Funchal Jazz Orchestra.
