Madeira produces more than 200 thousand plants per year in forest nurseries

The Institute of Forestry and Nature Conservation exceeded the defined target of producing 200 thousand plants per year in forest nurseries, informed this Wednesday, June 5th, the regional secretary of Agriculture and Environment, Rafaela Fernandes. 

On this Environment Day, the minister visited the Santa nursery, in Porto Moniz, in the company of the president of the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation, Manuel Filipe, and the vice-advisor for the Ecological Transition, Fight Against Climate Change and Energy, of the government of the Canary Islands, Julieta Schallenberg.

On the occasion, Rafaela Fernandes highlighted that the Region exceeded the defined target of 200 thousand plants per year, stating that Madeira “already has the capacity to produce all the plants necessary for the reforestation work on the island of Madeira and Porto Santo”.

According to the Environmental Ministry, production has increased significantly in recent years, with an average of 200,000 plants per year, belonging to 105 different species, 85% of which are indigenous.

The Madeira archipelago has five forest nurseries under the responsibility of the Institute of Forestry and Nature Conservation (IFCN), located in Salões (Porto Santo), Pico das Pedras (Santana), Santa (Porto Moniz), Casa Velha (Santo da Serra) and Matur (Machico).
