“The beginning of the end of Bores began with the attitude of a prosecutor who was completely insensitive to the animal cause”, points out João Freitas.
The Animal Ombudsman in Madeira, João Henriques de Freitas, says he received the news of the death of the desert lynx with “deep sadness and dismay” and regrets the fact that the Animal Ombudsman “was never considered or found in this case”.
João Freitas states that “the beginning of the end of Bores began with the attitude of a prosecutor who was completely insensitive to the animal cause” and argues that “someone has to be responsible for everything that happened”.
“We know that initially the matter was in the hands of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which later decided that it no longer had jurisdiction and appointed a trustee, and after the damage had been done, it was passed on to the administrative entity. These people should have as their first objective the protection of the animal and if this animal was well cared for by its family (it was domesticated as we see in the videos and photographs sleeping in the beds and playing with its owners and other cats) a trustee should never have been appointed”, he said, outraged by what happened.
The Animal Ombudsman also added that “there is arrogance on the part of certain prosecutors”, regretting that “in these cases people are not criminally responsible”.
As for the lynx, which died while being cared for by the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN), João Freitas argues that “it is important to determine who is responsible”.
“Now we need to know who ordered the animal to be sedated, who fired the shot, if it was possible to imagine this outcome, why he didn’t go with a family… a set of questions that someone has to know how to answer because at the end of the day, the one who paid for this whole mess was Bores,” he added.
