  4. Unmistakably Garajau beach as it was before the buildings were all destroyed by fire around 1999/2000 ?? We were on holiday in Madeira in 1997 when a Madeiran friend took us down the old, very dilapidated, cobbled road in an equally dilapidated VW camper van!! It was late afternoon following a day touring many parts of the island that holiday makers wouldn’t normally see, I think it was his niece who ran the restaurant down there, the kitchen was housed in the cave with the eating area on the outside terrace. We were introduced to the local specialities of lapas followed by picanha with french fries and delicious fresh bread. Who would have thought that just three years later we would make the decision to retire to Madeira and even more surprising, end up living just above the Christo Rei overlooking a part of Madeira we had not visited until that day in 1997.
