Orlando Fernandes meets tomorrow with ACIF to discuss the tourist tax in Funchal

Orlando Fernandes, Independent Municipal Deputy in the Municipality of Funchal, starts tomorrow, February 14, a series of meetings with hotel directors and associations related to the sector to find out what entities with direct knowledge and recognized critical views on what the hotel sector think about the implementation of the tourist tax in the Municipality of Funchal.

The first meeting takes place at ACIF, at 4 pm, and the independent deputy intends to gather contributions to define his position at the Funchal Municipal Assembly on this matter approved at a meeting of the city council executive, which is in public consultation, until 19th March.

  1. If the money is reinvested in infrastructure and maintenance of facilities that serve the tourism industry great but if the money just disappears into the general budget or worse pays for more jobs for the boys on the friends of a friend basis without any further benefits to either the city or tourist then I for one will not be supporting this extra tax.

  2. There is already a tourist tax in the form of inflated water and rubbish collection charges for anyone that has an AL licence.

  3. They are looking at 2€ per person per day to a maximum 7 days. So no more than 14€ each.

  4. Due to the recent increase in the number of hotels and ALs in Funchal the amount that can be charged to tourists is dropping. Even this amount will be significant.

  5. Was in funchal in January Was a lovely place but won’t return if more tax is added and with brexit now done god knows what’s gonna happen rather go to America

These things tend to creep up, its getting them started and the reaction to that that’s difficult from a political stance, once introduced they inevitably go up, look at what they have done with air transport tax, airport parking etc, milk the tourists until the pips squeak or they stay at home or go somewhere that doesn’t see them as cash cows yet, the industry already suffers from travel company collapses, terrorism related incidents and God forbid an upcoming pandemic. And haven’t we all been reading for months how tourism is down year on year here, yet they act like lemmings.

    1. Well if easyJet and Transavia drop all flights to the island up to 600,000 visitors a year could be lost. The effects would devastate the island’s economy.

      The government needs to sort out the social discount payment scheme to the airlines pdq.

    1. From whst I have seen elsewhere easyjet are tgreatening to drop ALL flights to the island and Transavia to drop flights from Porto.

      The problem is – currently residents of Madeira(& Azores) pay normal fare for a return flight then claim the discount. Now the government appears to want the airlines to apply the discount at time of purchase and then the airline to claim back the top up monies. So, this creates extra admin for the airlines and as usual, the government will drag its heels coughing up. In other words the government want something for nothing and expect the airlines to absorb the costs.

      So, I wouldn’t blame easyjet(of whom I am no fan) for sticking two fingers up to Madeira and dropping every flight. The effects would be catastrophic for the island.

    Apparently these guys didn’t learned anything with the story about the chicken with the golden eggs

  9. A tourist tax would never put me off coming to Madeira as I love the island but I think the money should be ring-fenced to help the local people.

  10. Patricia H / see comments above. I entirely agree with you I would happily pay a week’s worth of €2 a day for a week. However I too would hope ALL tax would benefit Maderia Island alone. We LOVE Maderia + it’s people. This year will be our 5th Christmas and 6th visit

  11. This tax will be paid by the owners of small ALs. The rate that they are able to charge has already decreased over recent years. They already pay much higher charges for their water and rubbish collection than ordinary residents and pay tax on any profit that they make. There are already large subsidies coming to Madeira.
