    1. “Tourist board is useless” — I didn’t think they were as good as that ????

    2. The Tourist Board people at the information centres do a fine job. The let down comes from the top. Many years ago I went into the main Tourist Board office three days before the start of the Classic Car Rally to get details of the event. They had no information. Outside the Câmara was arranging the barriers. Police were in evidence. Somehow it was possible to have the event use city hall budgets but it was not conditional upon supplying information to the tourist board. But Madeira is like that. My point is not to chastise the front line workers, a truly lovely, hardworking group, but to aim your ire higher up.

      With regard to the levadas it is disappointing that motor cross bikes are beginning to use these routes. It destroys the peace, the smell of nature and the paths themselves.

    2. Various places such as Cyprus, Canary islands and the Belaeriacs are hoping to re-open to holiday makers soon but NOT from the UK just yet. It’s felt that the UK was slow to react and is many weeks behind the rest of Europe in beating the virus.

      1. It would be wonderful to open Madeira to tourism as soon as possible but without a vaccine that soon as possible becomes sometime next year. To open without the vaccine has the potential to do greater economic harm than keeping the island closed.
        One case of Covid 19 and the hotel would be quarantined, most of the tourists, assuming there is no spread of the plague, would be flying home on new flights. The hotel would need to be completely sanitized. Tourists expecting to come would have to be put up in alternative accommodation.

        This is a very long road. I think we are being fed encouragement which will become a different story…..reality. Vaccine first.

  3. The former Janssen Pharmaceutica at Beerse Belgium, now Johnson & Johnson, has been succesfull in developping a vaccin contra Covid-19, has shown on animal tests. They will speed up test procedures to make tests possible on people in september. There is hope !
