Porto Moniz registers first suspected case of covid-19

All counties in the Region have already registered suspected cases of covid-19, according to Tuesday’s epidemiological situation report, published by the Regional Secretariat for Health and Civil Protection. Until Monday, Porto Moniz was the only municipality in Madeira still without any suspicious case, now having one.

Find out the total number of suspected cases registered, in each municipality, since 29 February:

Funchal (324), Câmara de Lobos (161), Ribeira Brava (24), Ponta do Sol (38), Calheta (20), Porto Moniz (1), São Vicente (11), Santana (15), Machico (35) ), Santa Cruz (80) and Porto Santo (39).

It is recalled that Madeira did not register, this Tuesday, any positive case of covid-19. At the moment, there are 67 suspected cases that still await laboratory results.

The total number of suspected cases in the Region, since 29 February, is 757, including nine non-residents.

The total number of confirmed positive cases is 85, the first of which is on 16 March. 13 of these are already recovered.

  1. I have never really understood the rationale of reporting “Suspected” cases ?… do they mean ‘Tests Conducted’ ?… If you conduct 1 test or 100k tests, surely the relevant figure is ‘Positive Results’… as I read it, since February only 757 tests (total) have been carried out. Is that correct ?

    1. Suspected Case means someone who the authorities know had direct and close contact with someone who is infected (tested positive) or someone who shows Coronavirus type symptoms. For instance, if I was found to be infected and I live with my wife, my wife would be a Suspected Case and would be tested even if she did not have any symptoms. If I lived by myself and had cough, temperature for 3 days, I would be a suspected case even if I did not know if I had contact with infected people. This does not correspond to the total number of tests because people are being tested for screening purposes like health workers, nursing homes, people who need to stay hospitalized. These are people who have no symptoms nor is believed to have had contact with infected people, but due to the context where they work/live they need to be tested.

  2. I also don’t understand the rationale behind reporting “suspected” cases. Of the hundreds of suspected cases only 85 so far are positive..? Thank goodness for that. So are the other suspected COVID-19 cases turning out to be just ordinary colds and allergies, etc.?

Dont buck the testing approach just for sake of it,this is a small island with areas of dense populations my g-d if it ran riot around these dense populated areas it would decimate the island population in a very short time. Let the authorities get on with their job and support their efforts is best approach.
