Is Madeira about to get a Lidl????

My friend Katy has just sent me this, so could the rumors be true, and we are about to get Lidl in Cancela???

I know there is a new store being built just up from Calcela Shopping, and have no idea yet what it will be.

  2. Pinto Doce needs some competition in the Lido area.
    The one we use has very smelly fish and meat counters which could be avoided if they were cleaner. There was talk of Aldi coming to the Island but nothing has come of it yet.

  3. I think if smaller shops on Madeira are already struggling to keep going because of Covid 19 this would be even more damaging for them. I`ve seen it happen here in Scotland . Just a thought.

    1. I think we can pray, I think we would have heard if that’s what it plans to be. I will have to have a drive past, and see how it is.

  5. That would be excellent news, specially for the Madeirans. Supermarkets, Pharmacies, Internet and mobile phone charges, are among the most expensive in Europe. Any real competition must be very welcome.
    BTW Searching Google maps “Lidl Madeira” shows 5 Lidl supermarkets… Are they taking over the island?

  7. There are multiple of these fake entries in Google maps. Just write Lidl into the Google maps search bar and you’ll see there’s like 5 places in madeira, but on reality they’re all fake.

    I don’t think this means anything.

    1. I think you are right. It coould have been when they talked about coming some 10 years ago or more. Of course nothing happens due to all the corruption.

  8. Would be nice to have a discount food store in town, even if it is a heck of a drive for me. Maybe if it’s a success they will open one out west.

  9. Let’s hope so, competition would be good. But pingo are good, but crafty on price to cheat you on offers etc, things are not always what they seem, misrepresentation.
