If you are travelling to Wales from mainland Portugal on or after 4am on 4 September, you will need to self-isolate for 14 days on your return (unless you are exempt). Check the latest guidance from the Welsh Government.

If you are travelling to Scotland from mainland Portugal or the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores on or after 4am on 5 September, you will need to self-isolate for 14 days on your return (unless you are exempt. Check the latest guidance from the Scottish Government.

It looks like England could change their decisions on this also today, lets just hope they follow Wales and keep Madeira and Azores off the quarantine list.

  1. Just a case of the Poison Dwarf over-reacting. Scots can fly in and out via Newcastle. Welsh via Bristol.

  2. I was angry with Scotland’s decision last night which is probably the reason my post didn’t appear. We live in Scotland and experience the Scottish Government’s attempt to disagree with the UK Government on a weekly basis.
    We will still travel to Madeira in November and February if Jet2 are still flying from Scotland??

  3. It appears if you are from england and your return flight from madeira lands in wales you will not have to self isolate the rules only apply from your country of origin.

    Even if you transit through another country where no exemption applies you must self isolate for 14 days. It all comes down to where you have visited in the 14 days prior to arrival in the UK. This particular rule applies across the UK. Not the individual components.

  5. On last night news Portugal was not on England’s quarantine list. The U.K. and
    N. Ireland is split between Wales and Scotland. Just checked BBC news this morning and no changes. ?

    Please don’t ignore this transit rule, where I live is under threat of lockdown because of one irresponsible individual who thought it was OK to do this. Then visited two club pubs, went to work in a supermarket and had two driving lessons.

    As a result approx 50 people are in isolation.

  7. Titling this post “Can this get anymore confusing” is a tad inflammatory. The restrictions are clear, they are not confusing. If you fly from A to B after date X, you will have to self-isolate for 14 days. That’s not confusing. The timing may not be great, but it’s not confusing.
    We are living in the midst of a life-threatening and economy-busting pandemic and yes the changes the UK Government and the UK Devolved Government bodies feel necessary to make are annoying and disruptive, but they are not confusing, and they are not done on a whim, they are done to protect us all.
    No longer do we live in ‘normal’ times, we are in a new normal that will likely last years, and that means travel restrictions may quickly change according to circumstances outside the control of UK plc. We can still travel to many foreign destinations, but there is always a risk that circumstances may change leading up to the trip or while we are away that means we have to quarantine on return, so we must have the contingency to accommodate that. If we don’t have the ability to accommodate that contingency, then don’t book it or don’t go. That’s the new normal.
    And, before everyone starts whingeing even more, just consider how much better off we are compared to some other countries, such as Australia, where for the most part they aren’t even allowed to cross State boundaries, let alone leave the country.

  8. You cannot avoid quarantine in UK countries by flying into a different airport. Every passenger arriving in the UK has to complete a Passenger Locator Form with the address where you will be staying. That is irrespective of whether that part of the UK has quarantine restrictions or not.

  10. It shouldn’t be confusing at all. Everyone knows where they are travelling from and what the rules are. If someone isn’t able to work that out then perhaps they shouldn’t be traveling?

  11. These conflicting decisions just show how divided the ex United Kingdom is. If the UK followed Madeira’s lead and carried out testing on arrival at airports, all 5his nonsense and confusion could largely be avoided. The damage caused to people’s lives, not to mention the aviation and tourism industry far outweighs the costs of implementing such a system.

  12. The likes of Messrs Reed and Wilkinson should keep their petty spite to themselves. The vast majority of Scots understand and appreciate that the First Minister is acting in the best interests of folk living in Scotland. Yes I believe she should follow the Welsh lead, but compared to the quality of leadership being shown in England she is outstanding.

  13. Well said Ian ! Oh and why would anyone want to get round the quarantine rules unless they are selfish, irresponsible and lacking in any sort or conscience ?

Whilst I am happy to try and get tested before coming to Madeira on 21sept or at the Funchal airport they were saying on breakfast tv this morning that airport testing only picks up 7% of positives unless repeated in 8 days. We can all only hope that those of us coming soon are trying our utmost to stay Covid free by mask wearing in UK and avoiding gatherings so that we are not one of the few that may be positive during our stay .

  15. It’s not confusing if you take a few mins to read the rules instead of being selfish to your own whims. This is a global pandemic remember! Some peoples noses will inevitably be put out of joint. Have a moan, a few tears of anger then get over it.
