Covid 19- 13 new cases

Madeira has 13 new positive cases of covid-19. These are 5 imported cases (3 from Poland, 1 from the Netherlands and 1 from the United Kingdom) and 8 cases of local transmission (associated with positive case contacts previously identified).

It should be noted that 3 of the cases of local transmission reported today relate to children, aged between 2 and 13 years, who attend 2 educational establishments (in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos and in the municipality of Funchal). The respective educational establishments were already identified and their contingency plan was active.

22 recovered cases to report making 160 active cases on the island.

  1. Is there any reliable information as to when the UK positive case arrived in the island ? It must be seven days now since an aircraft has arrived from the UK. If so it would seem to go some way towards disproving tests prior to embarking are valid.

    3. BA and Easyjet still flying from London to Madeira and Jet2 still flying from Edinburgh. Even if they were not, travellers can still get from UK to Madeira everyday via Lisbon. Madeira is not closed for travellers arriving from UK, in fact, it is not closed to anyone.

    1. yes Jane, and Christiano Ronaldo is also bothered by these test. Has to test several times to get the desired result.

  4. The data on COVID tests is clear. No COVID test can claim 100% accuracy which is not dissimilar to many diagnostic tests. It’s also clear that without these tests the pandemic would be exponentially worse and Madeira would be powerless against the virus unless the entire island was quarantined and banned all arrivals/tourists.
    Antigen tests can be a crude determinate of infection especially early in infection often leading to conflicting results. PCR are much more reliable but also produce false negative results if done too early after exposure. It can take at least four/five or several more days after exposure for an adequate viral load for accurate measurement. Testing technique also matters as there is also a higher false negative rate using a throat swab specimen versus a deep nasal specimen. The bottom line is that there is always going to be a time gap between exposure and the ability to discover if someone is infected. In addition all antigen and PCR tests are not created equal and can have differring false negative rates.
    Additional testing of arrivals several days after arrival may catch a few additional positive cases but no matter how stringent the testing some Covid positive people will slip through. Hence the need for continuing emphasis on masks, social distancing, limiting large gatherings, and hand hygiene.

  5. Hard to see how the traditional Christmas festivities in Madeira can go ahead given the likeihood of greater community transmission in the weeks ahead.
