CONFINEMENT IN MADEIRA IS NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION

The President of the Regional Government says that a new confinement is not ruled out if the Region enters a situation of active community transmission.

Miguel Albuquerque assured in the program ‘Em Entrevista’, from RTP-Madeira, that he will not hesitate to decree the confinement if Madeira enters a situation of active community transmission even if that jeopardises the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

According to the official, the most important thing is to protect the health and life of the people of Madeira, the most important value at stake this year. However, it ensures that the situation is now under control.

    1. Totally agree, I really do t think he is sure what he is doing now, there will not be a lockdown before the new year, as all the tourists are now coming. I think they have lost control in Machico and panicking a bit.

    “LOCKDOWN” is possibly the appropriate translation in this case.

    1. Impossible to lockdown though before the new year with all the tourists here, and thousands arriving each day now. Confine locals maybe in areas, Machico is out of control, and probably Câmara de Lobos.

  5. I think last time he did it you had to stay in your Region, i.e. where you live Santa Cruz people cannot move into Funchal, Calehta people stay over their side, it caused confusion with the police stopping cars and checking why they were going from A to B.

  6. The journalist asked if the situation got out of control if the lockdown was an option. He said definetely yes. But that the situation was under control. What exactly is the news here? Does any world leader respond differently with the same question?

    I also strugle to understand Tobi’s comment on things out of control. The past week there were 134 cases in Madeira. This week there was 114. So, in your perspective the fact that there were less 20 cases means things got worse? You also say that things are out of control in Machico. Machico recorded 0 (zero cases) yesterday. Is this the definiton of something out of control?

      1. I am sorry Tobi, I Know you have your political preferences but I am not going to feed that sort of ridiculous conspiracy speech. Let me just tell you that your blog is attended by many potential tourists but you could at least try be fair to the island and islanders that welcomed you and put those political aspects aside and give people the truth.

        1. I don’t do politics at all nor religion never have done never will, its faxmct they are all liars and look after themselves in any country. You are not living here so you don’t really know what is happening in certain areas. Machico has become a no go area for many now, and they wouldn’t have closed many places and taped up public spaces for no reason.

From March up to now there are countless posts of yours saying they are liars bla bla, starting by the “completely out of control” situation in Camara de Lobos where they “didn’t know what they were doing” back in April that in one week it was sorted, then you said that the compulsory mask wearing was because they were “not telling us the truth” and everything was calm in August, then it was the “nail in the coffin” testing requirement at the airport that most tourist regions across Europe decided to do the same, etc, etc. You are picking on a region that has a safe record which has very hard to achieve and publish your ridiculous conspiracy theories so that hundreads of travellers can read. Your putting down all the effort of the islanders with this type of non sense.

            For work reasons I am half year in Madeira and half year in Porto. I have been in Madeira since mid-August, I know exactly what is going on. The company I work in Porto had, in a single week, more cases than all the Machico council since the pandemic started. So when you speak of an uncontrolled situation you have no idea what uncontrolled means.

            It was the day before yesterday Machico had zero cases. It has been explained several times but when someone tests positive its close contacts are isolated for 14 days and tested afterwards. So if two people from different of 4 people households test positive, after 14 days that could potentially mean 8 cases in a single day. That is a system working, in many regions they dont even test close contacts, but you prefer to use that information in the “OMG mode” for political reasons.

    1. Lucky you. My Monday flight was cancelled weeks ago although I think that was down to not enough bums on seats! Enjoy and have a poncha for me (or two or three!).

  8. Shall I stay or shall I go? That is the question. 7 weeks to go but I feel it will be decided for us, by others. We are so missing our Madeira fix. If we don’t go, then that’s a further 3 weeks banked, making 8 in total. The upside is get the vaccine and blow the lot in one go. Happy days but my liver and Poncha might not survive.

    1. After Jan 1st Britons will not be allowed to travel in to the EU during the pandemic. The UK will be considered to be outside the European covid-safe area. Individual EU states can make their own arrangements and open safe-corridors. So, we have to wait and see how things evolve in 2021. Possibly Madeira will still accept UK holidaymakers.

  10. My concern is not whether or not there is any kind of lockdown. It is , that as cases rise especially over the holidays , that the hospital will not be able to cope.

  11. Guys and Girls its all about being sensible. Have lived in Madeira since 2012 and providing everyone takes their and everybody else’s safety into consideration in daily life we are still one of the safest places in the world to be right now.

  12. Tobi comments do you honestly think they are giving the right numbers reminds me when I was here for the great flood when the government gave the official figures of deaths .
    Every local i spoke to knew the real figures were so much higher but at the time and now tourism is so essential so need to keep an open mind
    However far safer here than England and the government here doing a good job
