MADEIRA REGISTERS 43 NEW CASES OF INFECTION

Today Madeira records a new record of new cases identified in 24 hours, accounting for 43 infections by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes covid-19.

Of the new cases, according to the Regional Health Directorate, 12 are imported, 11 of which were identified in passengers from the United Kingdom, and one from France. The remaining 31 are local transmission.

On the other hand, there are 26 more recovered cases, so the Region now counts 861 recovered cases of covid-19. That is why 321 are currently active cases in Madeira, of which 74 are imported cases and 247 are cases of local transmission. Regarding the residence of active cases, 47 are non-residents and 274 are residents.

There are 19 people in the dedicated area for Covid at the Nelio Mendonça Hospital, 1 of those in Intensive care.

  1. People are not being responsible and traveling from high risk areas in UK.We are going into lockdown in many areas. Christmas is all but cancelled here. I know first hand as my sister is lying in a covid bed seriously ill. It’s time people woke up to the reality of the pandemic, and the new strain of covid is much easier to pass it on.

  2. That is awful news today of 11 new uk positive cases arriving in Madeira. We were very fortunate to have a great 2 weeks in Madeira in September/October but now really feel nobody should travel from the uk now and if these 11 have the new variant which is more transmissible the impact could be huge on the others on those flights.

  3. I find it quite shameful that Brits are importing the virus into Madeira. A casual disregard for those living on the island. The UK is the biggest offender according to the numbers reported. Followed by Poland.

    However the virus – or a new strain of it – is spreading very fast in the UK. And from midnight most of the South East and all of London is in the newly created Tier 4. And going abroad is banned.in Tier 4. And Christmas relaxation is reduced nationally to just Xmas Day. That should come as a relief to Madeira. And I am surprised Madeira did not ban people from the UK entering some weeks ago.

    Living in Surrey, we will be unable to travel from Tier 4 as well, anywhere outside Tier 4. Sad but for the greater good . We have a vaccine in the offing and as Boris has said – we are more likely to see our loved ones next Xmas if we lockdown this Xmas !

    With 25000 new virus cases per day and 500+ virus deaths per day in England – any sacrifices are worthwhile.

  4. Tobi, please don’t block this message. Folk who have been following my posts will know that I predicted this situation many months ago. That is why I have bought the only Ultraviolet C blood irradiation system in Madeira, at a cost of around 4000 euros, and called tirelessly for a phase one clinical trial of its safety and efficacy (see my group The Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation Group). I have suffered much calumny and suspicion that I’m only in it for the money. That’s simply not true. I genuinely believe, having read all the peer reviewed literature (not to mention thirty years experience in the field of radiation biology, two Masters degrees in biology and environmental management, etc) that UBI can save COVID patient lives. There are now enough hospitalized patients at Dr Nelio Mendonca hospital to conduct a randomised, placebo controlled, double blind trial of sufficient statistical power to detect a five percent (p=0.05, CI 95%) difference. If all your members petition the RAM health authorities I think we would put this procedure on the map. It’s fast, virtually costless, takes less than thirty minutes, doesnt need a clean room or ICU., and eliminates all viral load within hours, thereby saving lives.

  5. So , with the UK travel ban , flights from London airports are cancelled I suppose , which will stop importation of new cases .

  7. The Lufthansa flight was completely full, today, not like in October. We paid for a PCR test in Germany, < 72 hours before.
    Those positive brits, did they make a PCR Test in UK or were they discovered here at the Madeira airport ?
    So did they travel to Madeira without knowing they had it ?
    I don‘t understand it…

  8. But as other people have indicated it would be the height of irresponsibility to avoid the ban by travelling to another airport. In fact under the new lock down rules in London, south-east, East Anglian one should not travel outside of the area. I said on this blog less than two months ago that the rate of import from the UK of the disease would get it into the local population. It has done and locals are now dying. I was ridiculed for trying to get tourists to wear masks in the street – unfortunately many still do not. They seem to think the mask is to protect their chin or their elbow. It’s only a matter of time before the new fast spreading virus is also brought here from England.
    Local laboratories are overwhelmed. It took my wife two weeks to get the results of a blood test.
    The reason: they have to give priority to COVID-19 tests for incoming people at the airport.

    1. The mutation is not just in the UK, the mutation is in other countries as well. It is the way that viruses normally evolve, to enable them to survive.

  9. Interesting that the Netherlands has just banned all flights from the UK starting today because of the new rapid spreading COVID-19 variant in the England.

    1. The Netherlands along with Denmark already have this mutation. It is also in Australia and California.

  10. We are in Tier 2 being in the South West and booked to come out in Feb for 4 weeks. We will hang on up to 3 days before we leave but sadly yet again we can see we will have to cancel. This new variant of the virus whilst high in London, will spread out if anyone saw the mass exodus from London before lockdown. Masses, no masks, no social spacing, nothing and there was 1000’s leaving, on packed trains, standing room only. We are very low of spirit but WE will be back but not sure when.

  11. Is their a way of finding out which flights contain the passengers who test positive or are all the passengers on those flights informed
    I believe all the people travelling in the last few days from the UK would be UK holidaymakers as the locals returning here for Christmas tend to come a few weeks ago as On my flight when the flights are cheaper

    1. No they don’t say this, if you were sitting close you might be notified but it’s almost impossible to be infected on a flight. Thousands of emigrants are coming from all over Europe, can also connect from the UK.

  12. It’s time to close the border with UK. Especially now that a new, more Infectious mutation has been identified in London and SE England. 11 new cases from uk yesterday. What next!!

    1. All that means is that they came from the UK, they could be any nationality such as Madeirans coming back for Xmas.

  14. There is a new virus strain spreading in the UK. Please cancel all flights from the UK. It’s a big threat!

  16. The current problem is in London and the South East of England. Much of Scotland is in tier 1. We were in Madeira during October and were horrified at the casual approach of locals not observing social distancing or wearing masks.
    We were due to return this week for the Festive Season but cancelled due to increase in local transmission. This virus will spread like wildfire in Madeira (and Madeirans have plenty experience of that) if they don’t get a grip and follow the ‘rules’.

  17. Why is it that some folks find it difficult to understand advice on “necessary travel only”.
    The world is experiencing one of its biggest crisis in modern times.
    Travel spreads the virus regardless of the precautions we take.
    Leisure travel should be at the bottom of our priority list at this moment in time.

  18. Several European countries now banning flights from the UK. When will Portugal act?
    Perhaps tourists are more important than people’s health?

    1. When will people .like you stop blaming “tourists” for spreading the virus on the island. Arriving infected tourists get quarantined. Arriving Madeirans should get quarantined but not all of them obey and they infect their family here and others in bars/restaurants. None of those elderly people that have died were infected by holidaymakers!!

      I really get angry at people condemning British tourists and blaming them for every case of Covid on the island.

      Not one single native Madeiran I have spoken too in the last week has condemned British tourists, only whingers like you have. I will end now or I would unleash a torrent of invective against certain whiners!

  19. How will the tier four level restrictions against travel impact the six flights scheduled from London tomorrow?

  20. How on Earth can anyone allow, or justify, a “pleasure” flight to depart from a U.K. Tier 4 Location? ALL Airline Air Crew and “front line” Airport workers must live within the Tier 4 catchment area …and nobody is legally allowed to leave such an area. Surely also Including incoming “joining and connection” passengers? By the way a total of 35,928 new cases of COVID in the last 24 hrs, have just been announced in the U.K. …

  21. Let’s hope your right. It seems like a rapidly evolving situation as just today several European countries have announced temporary bans on travel from UK. Whether more countries will follow the lead of Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, and Italy is yet to be seen.

    You’re a real case. How do you think the virus got to Madeira if tourists didn’t bring it? Which group of tourists have been the most infected? Why in the middle of a deadly global pandemic do some people think going on holiday is “essential business”.
    I don’t get it
    . People like you with your attitude are key spreaders. I guess you don’t believe in wearing a mask either.

    1. And don’t you think we need tourists here to survive, cwgat about the thousands out of work now and struggling to pay bills. I guess you are retired also.

    2. Yes I do wear a mask and follow all of the local regulations. So in your mind only British tourists have carried the virus to the island. No French, Polish, German etc carried it and mainland Portuguese and native citizens didn’t carry it either?

      Wake up and smell the coffee.

    3. You will never be able to trace who or what caused the virus to land here. E.g. I know a person who spends every weekend here while during the week that person works in a European country. Is that person the culprit???
      The sad fact is that there is presently nothing to stop the virus. Hopefully the vaccinations turn the wheel. Until then we’ll have to comply with the rules recommended by the medical experts.

    There is no scientifically documented proof re efficacy. And yes, you should not have asked Tobi to publish your marketing stint.
