Madeira registers today new death associated with Covid-19

She died today at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, a 97-year-old patient with Covid-19, bringing to nine the number of deaths associated with the new coronavirus in Madeira.

According to a note sent by the office of the Regional Secretary of Health, Pedro Ramos, the patient had been hospitalized in the Unit dedicated to COVID-19 since December 11 and had multiple associated comorbidities.

To the bereaved family, the Government presents “heartfelt condolences”.

  1. How different the headline and article read. Suddenly in the article ‘new’ covid is cause.

    1. I agree, Michael, but it is sad none the less…to all who have lost a loved one I send my heartfelt condolences. To those who still continue to party like no tomorrow, take heed! My partner is 86 with a heart condition, I thank God everyday he is still with me so I’m sure you’ll all understand if we keep safe this year we can all look forward to another wonderful year in paradise.

  3. I’m guessing Portugal are going to ban flights as rest of Europe is doing. Let’s hope Madeira and Azores don’t as it’s going to have a massive effect on the Madeiran economy.

I’d be interested in hearing from folk who persist in knocking the UK PM as barmy etc etc just exactly what they’d have done in the face of an unknown, uncontrollable, unprecedented virus if they’d been in charge of the country. Those without an evidence-based clue should maybe desist from carping and do what’s advised for everyone’s sake

    1. Lock down promptly when he was advised to by the medical profession rather than tritely wishing people a merry little Christmas for a start.

  7. I certainly wouldn’t want to be the leader of any government in the world right now . The situation changes day to day , decisions have to be made based on medical expertise and whatever you do will be deemed wrong.
    This is way past politics. Any politician in power would have to cede to the specialist advice from eminent doctors . As Ann says , do what’s advised for everyone’s sake .

  8. Would have locked down earlier than we originally did. Stopped handing contracts to non-medical companies (who just happened to have links with the government) so that PPI was available to everyone in high risk situations. Got track and trace properly sorted through local control instead of nationally. The whole mess has been well documented on BBC which according to some is conservative. Put London and parts of South into tier 3 when virtually everywhere up North was in it instead of tier 2 to protect their businesses which has now resulted in the mess we are in.

No, Jill, you needn’t say more, because, like all of us here and everywhere, you are speaking with full hindsight and with no knowledge at all of what it was like from the start, nor what it’s like to govern a country. No-one at all, in the whole world, let alone in the UK, knew what to do from the beginning, how could they. We should all simply go with what is advised and not mix with anyone, nor travel anywhere, stop carping and just get real.

  10. It didn’t need hindsight Ann. It became clear very quickly that the problem was China not being honest and immediate action to stop travel from there should have been put in place
