PSP and SEF prevent British passengers from disembarking in Madeira

Dozens of English passengers are stranded on board the British Airways flight at Madeira airport.

A Tui Fly plane arrived empty to carry out a repatriation trip for English citizens.

Dozens of passengers from the UK are being held aboard the British Airways aircraft that landed on Monday morning at Madeira airport, due to restrictions applied because of the new Covid-19 flu in that British country.

At issue is the British Airways flight from London, Heathrow, which arrived at 11:25 am. From Gatwick the TuiFly aircraft arrived, which landed at 11:35 am to carry out a flight for the repatriation of British citizens who were on holiday in Madeira.

  1. If those on board have a residency – this is not right, however, if they are coming to holiday here then British Airways are acting iresponsibly- they were flying from tier 4 for heaven’s sake! That said I do hope the passengers are looked after well [and at BA expense] Frustrating times but safety is of Paramount importance.

  2. Sounds as though BA hadn’t got the memo? ? Unless (as Pete says) they have residency also have to wonder why passengers would think it was OK…..

  3. People were told not to travel unless they were an essential key worker abroad. Why people behave like they do not listening to the government who have had to take this action to prevent further spread. I am glad Madeira is acting on the scientific evidence. The new strain is passed on much quicker and many UK citizens are at risk.

  4. We were supposed to travel but made our own decision to cancel due to the huge amount of covid here in the UK which is out of control. We don’t want to catch it and if we do have it done want to spread it

    1. Fair play to you. If more people had that kind of attitude the world wouldn’t be in such a mess

  5. A wise precaution perhaps by the island authorities ? Given that UK residents going to/ returning to Madeira hsve been major importers of the virus.

    Writing as someone living in the new UK Tier 4 area . The speed of this mutated virus is reportedly dreadful – 70 % faster than the first type . Here many of us are just battening found the hatches . And planning to emerge when we have had our vaccination.Which may be weeks away yet But needs must with 500+ deaths per day in England.

    I am s bit puzzled though why the airline was not told before its plane took off so as to avoid the current situation. By cancelling/ rescheduling the flight.

    We do pray for the safety of Madreirans and it becoming ( albeit a new form of ) normal again.

  6. Why dont people listen & just stay home. Yes we’d all love to be in Madiera right now, but not in this current situation. Thats the reason this virus is spreading so quickly. What does it take for some people to understand. The mind boggles.

    1. We’re all missing our visits to the island, especially for Christmas and New Year. Is it responsible for anyone’s to be visiting the island in the current pandemic situation?
