ELEVEN YEARS AFTER THE FEBRUARY 20 TRAGEDY “WE HAVE PLENTY OF REASONS TO BE PROUD” (WITH VIDEO)

Today, 11 years after February 20, 2010, we have plenty of reasons to be proud. All, from Madeira and Porto Santo, without exception. To all those who helped us in solidarity to recover from the catastrophe, the Regional Government expresses a thank you, and deep respect for all those who saw their lives affected by what happened on February 20th, 2010.   1. The power of nature is terrifying at times. Thankfully to heavy rains over Christmas were nowhere near as bad as 2010 even so they did considerable damage.

  2. Can I recommend a remarkable charity set up in the wake of the 2010 catastrophe it is called ‘ People Helping People organised by the church we attend when in Madeira. Penha de Franca. And overseen by the marvellous Father Bernardino. It distributes every penny collected to those who cannot afford even the basics. We were surprised that away from all the bling there is real poverty for many in Madeira. All concealed from the average visitor like us.

  3. We visited two weeks after the floods. We were shocked at the damage. In the two weeks we were in Funchal the council workers etc, worked extremely hard. There was a service held in the conference centre at the Casino – a Thanksgiving service for those who lost their lives. It was extremely sad to see the people going in, all wearing badges with a photograph of their deceased family member, on their lapels. At the end of our stay we were asked to contribute to a fund to help all who lost family. This we did gladly. Over the years since this awful flood, new visitors would not realise the promenade had ever been other than it is now. A simple commemorative wooden plaque in the market reminds us of this sad time.

    1. There had been talk of a proper permanent memorial to be erected at the sea front in time for the tenth anniversary. Still waiting………… ?

      1. We were lucky to depart a week before or we would definitley have been caught in it, that time of day we always took our dear friend along the front because she was in her eghties and it was a flat walk down to old town for light lunch.
        And after this dreadful time if ever you wanted to see collective responsibility and human spirit at its best then look no further than these wonderful islanders

  4. I remember that very well, also that the church on the end of the Teleferique was splashed away by the sea container beside it, Got that much water force that it blew away the church 🙂
    And many more sad things that happend.

  5. Still remember it all……so sad, and so silent island on sunday. So many people……

  7. I remember watching a programme about the worst weathers a few years ago which included this event. It was horrible to watch and must have been terrifying for the residents.
