  1. We have timeshares in the Royal Savoy and can’t believe there is yet another Savoy Hotel in Madeira. Where is the Insular please?

  2. Its not a Hotel. This is for private residences. Prices from €400,000 to €2.6M.
    Its Savoy quality and a brilliant regeneration project for the Old Town area.

  4. Lots more tourists will make the multi billionaire who owns it even richer. We all know what he pays his staff.

    2. Plus he owns the concrete company on the island, that’s why it’s been better for him the hotels closed and the staff on lay-off. And they been doing all the roads tunnels, all the storm damage along the rivers from 2010 and so on.

The chimney would be very expensive to dismantle by hand, it appears to be reinforced concrete covered in brick slips, these would need to be specially cast to take in the slight curve of chimney, lets hope that they do replace the slips and not just take off remainder and leave it as a concrete chimney.

  7. So following on from a post a few days ago about less scrupulous solicitors and the like, how will this development protect buyers and investors. Lovely regeneration and as a landscape architect I see a rare example that what is green will actually happen. That said even if it was possible, not for me. The noise and pollution would be too much. As for the chimney, the late great Fred Dibner would have it down in a week, brick by brick.

I knew Fred personally,as a restorer and collector of veteran, cars in my spare time and owner of a property across road from him and his wife Alison and his interest in steam engines we had a lot of interests in common, we spent many a happy hour talking through the issues of dropping chimneys ( and as an ex RAF engineer who put together and inserted the charges for the demolition of the war head storage bunkers at RAF Brize Norten, we had good dialogue on the differences between his way and explosive ways)he used timber balks and car tyer’s to drop chimneys, there is no space around to drop this chimney down into.
    Also if you read what I say, its not a brick chimney, its a cast reinforced concrete chimney, so jack hammer, cutting gear and reducing scaffolding is only way to get this baby down and over a very long time frame.

  9. Why couldn’t they not work with the facade, keeping its traditional old heritage look, everything has to be new nowadays. Soon Funchal will just resemble modern apartments. How boring is that.
    Hopefully they will retain the chimney.
    Look at the new Savoy, not much style or architectural value.

    1. I agree. I do like the traditional architecture of Madeira and the Azores. Once you get lots of this “new” architecture a places loses its character.

  10. There is an old saying in architectural circles, probably comes from uni, and it goes like this.
    Architecture has to be controversial to move forward.
    This building came very close to being destroyed, so it either stands as is ( even before the fire, little done with it) or it has to serve a new purposeful/ commercial need or it goes same way as other ( many ) abandoned buildings around the island.

    1. There are so many abandoned properties around. I usually go for a walk along the front then up past Barreirinho and on to Rua São Tiago and there are dozens of bricked up houses in that area. The plots must belong to somebody, so why do they not either restore or redevelop the properties?

      1. In fact usually they don’t belong to someone, they belong to a lot of people. And there resides de problem. Many of these buildings have been inherit by someone’s sons. Sometimes, families of 5 or 6 brothers or sisters that have different views on what they want from the building. This usually puts investors off since sometimes it takes a long time and effort to find an agreement between all and investors just quit.

  12. Its the crazy inheritance laws that create the problem, some time back the government where talking of confiscating them, but what then, no money to fund rebovating them!!!! And why should the government just not alter the inheritance laws which clearly are not working. Those properties abandoned because of emigration are now going to be revisited from returning families from places that are now in political turmoil and emigrants are returning to find there are no doors ( or rooves) to knock on.

  14. I see the chimney is been dismantled, such a shame these architectural features can not be retained.
    Do they have no idea on design, judging by the Savoy, I would say not.
    Let’s see what other areas are not as on the plans submitted and architecture drawings of the project.
