AstraZeneca vaccines arrive this Friday in Madeira

AstraZeneca’s 8,500 doses of vaccines arrive in the Region tomorrow, Friday, in an operation provided by the Portuguese Air Force and scheduled for the afternoon.

The air transport of vaccines is accompanied by a pharmacist and will be received by the director of the pharmacy of the RAM Health Service, Martinha Garcia, at the airport.

The Public Security Police will monitor the transport of vaccines to the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital.

“AstraZeneca vaccines will be very important to continue the vaccination campaign against COVID-19 in RAM”, says a note from the regional health department.

  1. At least this vaccine can be kept in an ordinary fridge and has a longer shelf life than the Pfizer one.

  2. This is good news, coupled with the incidence and recovery from covid-19, just the positive news we need. Does anyone know what the rollout plan is?

  3. The Oxford Astra Zeneca vaccine is a triumph of UK science. Some of my family have received Pfizer and others Astra Zenrca. Both are equally effective. Sadly the AZ vaccine was initially rubbished by Macron snd Merkel. To the great disservice of their citizens. And very slow progress for their vaccination programmes.

    But one senses a lightening of the mood in the UK with 21,000,000 of us having had their first jab. That does not diminish the sadness over lives lost . 126,000 deaths from the virus in the UK. A national tragedy.

    When one has lost friends to the Virus one appreciates how especially fortunate the
    21 000,000 are.

    1. No, not true Michael. Germany and France were justifiably cautious because of a lack of data regarding individuals over the age of 65. Now they have seen the data from the UK which also justifiably took a less cautious approach, they are content to use the vaccine in this age group. Just because countries are more or less cautious when it comes to scientific data and protecting their citizens it does not mean that they are rubbishing the vaccine and to say they are is completely incorrect. The vaccine rollout should not be regarded as a competition.

    2. The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is now being tweaked to deal with variants such as the Brazilian strain. This should be ready for use by the Autumn. So, some will get this for their 2nd jab and those who have had two jabs already should be able to get it as a booster. ?

  4. We are on the Isle of Wight and our neighbour tragically died of Covid 2 weeks ago, a truly terrible disease. Both me and my husband have now had our first vaccination. We are very happy that Madeira has received this shipment today and are thankful to both science and scientists for this. Long may your shipments continue. Stay safe Madeira. We can’t wait to see you again. Xxx

  5. This is not a fight one nation against another.
    This is a fight mankind against a virus.
    As long as people in different nations ore inbetween the same country fight against each other, the responsible politicians with all the done mistakes are sitting comfortable in their armchairs.
    One contry is vaccinating slowly, the other has more deaths, others just say Covid is just a little sickness.
    Some come back down to earth when they are infected themselves
    Corona does one thing: It shows absolutely clear, what all goes wrong in the world.
    Being able to see all this and change it, would be one of the biggest chance for mankind.
    But I am not very optimistic about it. The moment the pandemic will come to an end, it will be like before or even worse. Fights, incredible richness next to enourmos poverty.
    One example? The Kismet mega yacht….

  6. Great news. We look forward to being a very small part of the recovery of Madeira by visiting for four weeks later this year. Always a great pleasure to spend time in Madeira. Let’s hope this pandemic is nearing its end. Huge credit to science and all scientists around the world.

  7. With all the talk for and against vaccine certificates I realised that if you log into your NHS Patient Access account your jabs are recorded under your medication list.

    Now Cyprus is saying they will welcome vaccinated tourists from the UK from May 1st(you can’t fly until after May 17th!). There is no word yet on how you prove you have had the jabs but I would think logging into your NHS account and showing it to immigration should suffice.

  8. In reply to Simon in particular… you are quite wrong. The so called survey was effectively fake news since it was a very very small sample of a South African sample and an unrepresentative one for over 65s. It mainly looked at young people. As our own UK epidemiologists said, it was facile to say it would work on young but not the old.

    There was zero proper analysis given by France and Germany and their politicking was disgraceful. There was no medical evidence to say the AZ vaccine did not work… It just suited Macron to rubbish it because they could not deliver it.

    I feel sorry for Portugese people for the ill served way they have been used by the failed politicians in the EU. The vaccine works, its slowing hospitalisation and its seems to be slowing transmission as well. I’ve had it… I advise all who can to have it.

  9. Trev, you are wrong. There was no evidence of efficacy in over 65s. Now there is. That’s all there is to this issue, the UK media turned it into a post Brexit issue as they do with anything concerning France and Germany currently. Sad that the vaccine rollout is being dragged into opportunistic political point scoring and wholly wrong.
