Thank you to Harald Sommer for this week’s numbers all is looking very good. The schools are all back now, so we could see a rise in local cases in the next weeks, but this won’t be anything significant.

    I apologise to Harald for hi jacking his post as this has little to do with the Incidence Rates but comment on an outrageous load of rubbish in a comment, published on September 16 under the headline “CONVINCING THE UNVACCINATED POPULATION TO DO SO IS THE GOVERNMENT’S INTENTION TO REACH THE TARGET OF 85%”
    I’m surprised by the lack of reaction to the comments of the ass hole, I glamourise him with that title, calling himself, anonymously, as Odin, I assume it is because readers do not go back to stories after the initial reading thus missing later posts. If like myself you are a believer in the vaccination program but are happy to allow a free choice to others then he has described us as, “the same people who would happily see the unvaccinated rounded up, stuffed into concentration camps and forced to take a ‘shower’ at bayonet point.” This from someone who describes himself as logical. He hasn’t quite called us Nazi’s but he describes us as the same people. I won’t entertain his “logic” by entering into conversation with him but would be interested in others thoughts.

  2. I read it as I’m sure many others did . These people want a response because they can then carry on with their narrative. By ignoring it , we don’t feed their nonsense . BTW ,
    I have no problem with those who don’t want a vaccine . Their body their choice.

  3. Let the science do the talking. The vaccination programme has saved hundreds of thousands of lives directly and/or indirectly. If you are pragmatic and interested in helping yourself and your fellow human beings overcome Covid you will participate. If not you may opt out.

  4. Regarding the vaccines and some folks obsession with quarantine and forced jabs, they should take notice of two countries, with completely different approach.

    Sweden vs Israel. Sweden never closed anything, no mask mandates, and are doing a lot better than Portugal and especially Israel or Gibraltar for that matter. The last two being the most vaccinated countries in the world.

    The number of Israeli being hospitalised presently is enormous and most of them has double vaccinated. When you compare the Swedish and Israeli curves it’s obvious something does not add up and the effectiveness of the vaccines is very concerning.

    In Denmark, there were not mask mandates and they have opened up completely with lower vaccination rates than Spain. They have fewer hospitalised and dead.

    How can anyone insist other people take a vaccine, that does not prevent you getting the disease or prevents you from infecting other people ? That’s not what used to be called a vaccine but profylactic treatment to lessen the effect of the disease when you get it.

    If the difference between getting a vaccine or not is strictly a matter of how sick you get, not whether you become sick or transmit it, be so important to force the reluctant to take ?

    Nobody know if and what long term effect such untested medicine will have. Usually nobody is against the precautionary principle, so why this pushy attitude ?

    1. Ragnar, a couple of observations.
      Mandates: some cultures are more in need of mandates than others. Those with a naturally compliant, collaborative and considerate population with high levels of basic scientific literacy, will have higher incidences of citizens who will do the right thing without needing to be further motivated by health officials.
      Current incidence rates: every country is different, presenting different vaccination rates, different population densities, different approaches to closing, opening and mitigating transmission in schools and across borders.

      Do you know how I can tell that your comparison of Sweden and Israel is motivated to fuel your bias? Because you declare that the difference between getting the vaccine or not is STRICTLY a matter of how sick you get, and you call the covid vaccines prophylactic treatments as opposed to vaccines.

      The vaccines are demonstrably preventing a lot of infections, and a lot of illness. Yes, there are breakthrough infections, but that doesn’t give you license to say every vaccinated person is as vulnerable to getting some degree of covid, as a non-vaccinated person. That simply is not true, and you seem capable of knowing this. You obviously read enough online material: enough to have come by the anti-vax buzzwords ‘prophylactic treatment’, so it boggles the mind you have not also come across statistics for how many cases and how many deaths the vaccines are sparing us.

      For your information, plenty of vaccines are not 100% efficacious. They are still called vaccines, and with the better covid vaccines, their protection is considered very good. Look at the flu vaccines we get yearly and compare efficacy.

      As for the precautionary principle, and ‘pushy attitudes’, consider the following.
      No principle is absolute. Ideally, precaution is weighed in a risk vs benefit analysis. Unless you have reason to believe you will have a strong adverse reaction to the covid vaccine, the risk vs benefit analysis STRONGLY favors receiving the vaccine. The risk of severe and/or long lasting damage from covid, including death, outweighs the risk of comparable effects from the vaccine by many orders of magnitude. There is simply no contest there, but of course the resistance of many people to a clear assessment of the vaccine is not rational. You can’t often reason with paranoia, conspiracy theories or financially or politically motivated fear and fear-mongering.

      ‘Pushy attitude’? It is perhaps deliberately unclear who you are calling pushy. If it is governments, consider that their primary mandate is to ensure the integrity and safety of the nation. High levels of vaccination prevent very significant disease, death, long covid, and the concomitant strain on health services, and economic losses. They also reduce the risk of new variants emerging more rapidly than we can keep up with. OF COURSE national health officials are going to do everything in their power to convince people to get vaccinated. It is up to you to understand this, instead of adopting the immature stance that they are being ‘pushy’. Unless you are a teenager going through a rebellious phase towards authority, you should be confident enough in your own freedom to resist the good advice of health officials. You can refuse the vaccines and take your chances with a virus that has killed millions of people and permanently disabled millions more. Yes there may be consequences from your decision: other people have the right to shield themselves from the greater risk to them you would then represent. But your freedom remains intact. Instead of whining about ‘pushy attitude’, I suggest you try to enjoy your freedom. Actual dictatorships abound on this earth: if you don’t live in one, try not to lose sight of your appreciation.

    helps to explain the Israel situation. The key point being that 90% of Israelis currently being hospitalised have not been vaccinated.

    As for Sweden and Denmark. They are both progressing towards full vaccination of their respective populations so they must obviously have faith in the science. Population density of these countries should tell you something pretty obvious about why infections have not been so high.
