REGIONAL GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES NEW MEASURES AGAINST COVID-19 TOMORROW FROM 12:00

The Regional Government is preparing to announce new guidelines against covid-19 tomorrow.

The new measures will be revealed at a press conference to be held at the premises of the Regional Secretariat for Health and Civil Protection, chaired by Pedro Ramos.

The official will take the opportunity to take stock of the epidemiological situation in Madeira.

    1. Tell us more about that please. Would be interested to know.

      The active cases are now about half of what they were a couple weeks ago. 90% of the population is vaccinated. Unlike Germany where there has been a rather large objection against vaccinacion and where an incidence of 2000 is enough to create great stress in health services and daily deaths.

      1. Why do you repeatedly refer to Germany? I guess it is because I’m a Jerry. But allow me tell you that I left Germany in 1971 and have lived mostly in South Africa and partly in the US and UK and now I’m here on Madeira. Germany to me is essentially the place where my mother was when I was born.

    2. Harald is a bundle of fun! At what point if ever, will you be happy letting people live their lives. If YOU worry about it, stay indoors and put lots of masks on when you dare to venture into the public domain. Other people want to get on with living!

  2. I don’t think Omicron is very serious at all. Time to remove the restrictions and get on with living. The time for fear has passed.

    1. Yes I agree, deaths are minimal, and hospital cases have been around the same for weeks now, let’s hope of some good news from the government and health director tomorrow, but I have a feeling not much will change yet. Nothing that will affect the most of us anyway.

  3. Are you sufficiently qualified to make that assessment? – You are probably aware that Omicron is more contagious than the Delta version. Whether or not you are inoculated the chance of catching Omicron is extremely high. As a result the local infrastructure could be seriously affected. Just imagine ambulance services, bombeiros, police and other essential services would be out of order. Not to mention rubbish removal, the pubs etc etc etc. – Maybe you wish to revise your statement.

      None of those catastrophic scenarios ocurred with double the active cases there are now. So why would that happen now?

  4. Hope that your goverment have learned, that the Omicron variant is not that dangerous. Omicron is now the main variant in Denmark, with allmost no people in ICU care. The Danish goverment has decided, that from 1st of February, the Covid 19 disease is no longer considered a socially dangerous disease, and all Covid 19/Corona restrictions will be lifted on tuesday.
    And yes! Omikron is more contagious than the Delta version, but it’s much milder, so it is not necessary for people to be hospitalized in the same numbers as with the Delta variant.

  5. The UK experts predicted in December that there would be between 600 and 6000 deaths per day from Omicron. Cases have peaked at an average of 260 per day and a qualification is now given that some of these are deaths from other causes but with a positive COVID test. It is now obvious that Omicron is less serious in its effects than Delta although more contagious. It is highly unlikely to threaten Madeira’s infrastructure but the restrictions continue to affect the islands economy.

Spot on Tobi and Andrew, luckily enough it is not as the appointed “experts” predicted and apparently 40% of people who contracted omnicron did not even know they had it, so yes its positive news for all of us to get on with our lives.     Seriously i think gov here have done good job this island depends on tourists
    You can always bring restrictions back but with vacination levels and herd immunity i doubt it
