TWO RYANAIR PLANES TURN BACK ON DEBUT DAY

First day of operation in Madeira is marked by two trips that diverted to Lisbon.

Before diverting, the two aircraft circled around Madeira Airport, but ended up not being able to land.

One of the flights came from Stanstead (England) and another from Lisbon.

Not sure what the reason was for these diverts, and not a great start….

  1. I wonder if Ryanair have enough pilots with the experience of landing in Madeira so didn’t fancy it ? Am I right in thinking airlines are meant to have 2 fully qualified pilots in the cockpit to land there ?

    2. Yes, all airlines meet the same protocol regarding pilot qualification in Madeira. They diverted because the runway was closed at the time they arrived. They followed the safety procedure as all other airlines do.

  3. Look at the weather Metar at the time of arrival of those two flights. Wind blowing 19kt from north and gusting at 30kt. Limit is 15kt average wind and 25kt gust. The runway was closed when those two flights diverted.

      1. Nowadays, not even TAP usually diverts to Porto Santo. Airlines don’t like getting their aircraft “stranded” in the middle of the Atlantic. Overnight in Porto Santo is also difficult to manage. Diverting to Faro or Lisbon where airlines have their based aircraft, crews and customer support and ticket offices is their prefered option because from the moment the passengers are in Faro/Lisbon it it easier to arrange the “rescue” flight.
