The Front Page of the Jornal Madeira on Wednesday whose photographic highlight goes to ‘Dubai’ Madeira inspired by the art of seven architects. Varino challenged seven architects to bring the housing towers that make up the ‘Dubai’ Madeira project to life. JM Imobiliário today reveals the works that support the largest private investment ever in the Region, budgeted at 300 million euros.

I just pray they are not Architects from Madeira.

    1. Looks like the North Peckham housing estate back in the late 70’s. Absolute disgrace that stinks of backhanders and mutual favours. This is not Madeira, it’s a travesty.

  3. I have an apartment directly in front of this planned monstrosity and am dreading it going ahead. No more sea views for me! The colours are dismal and who is going to be able to afford them? It’s shocking – Madeira is not Dubai and who would want it to be? The attraction of the island is its natural beauty – better to build green spaces and planting for people to enjoy. Ambition and greed over common sense! Madeira will soon look like Benidorm…

    1. What about the sea views from the houses that went away when the “montrosity” you live in was built? Did you care at that time?

  4. Everyone who walked past this piece of wasteland have probably said “someone should build houses there”… no one said “someone should build a small town there”…

    1. No, not everyone. I walked past it daily for four years and enjoyed that it was a green, wild space.

Could Madeira support a development like this with reference to infrastructure, education, consumer supplies, medical assistance etc. Would surely put Madeira in RUIN and I am sure cut down the visitors to your gorgeous island. Us tourists would find another place to visit for sure. We visit from Canada.

  7. I think you are still missing the point that those are not the actual projects… they are not done yet. Those are random renders. I have tried to explain this to you in previous posts…

    Anyway, the Savoy Palace which was a disgrace is at about 100% occupancy….

    1. Madeira will just become even more of a mass tourist destination than it already is, and lose its natural beauty, but no one cares, it’s all about lining the pockets of a few. Few locals could afford to buy or rent these places. I am glad I am leaving next year before the island becomes even more of a building site than it already is.

      1. Then another house will be available to people who actually want to live here and accept that the island is not their private garden.

        1. What’s your problem? Why are you so hostile to anyone who expresses an opinion? Not supporting every project that pops up around the island doesn’t mean you want the whole place to be your private garden. People are allowed to express that what initially attracted them seems to be disappearing.

    2. The Savoy Palace is seldom at 100% occupancy despite many Royal Savoy owners having to stay there when using up banked weeks. Last week it was 60%

    4. Random renders? Why would the developers release ‘random’ renders. They’d have to be completely incompetent. The renders that get released for massive projects like this one have A LOT of scrutiny and ‘love’ put into them before release.

  8. I preferred the garden allotments that allowed local people to grow there own vegetables and fruit. It is a great pity you can’t stop so called progress!

    1. Antonio Lamas is a bit of a troll. He is hyper reactive to comments from foreigners and hostile to anyone who doesn’t 100% support every single aspect of life, business and government in Madeira.

This is over development at its worst! “A monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved and elegant friend’ as Prince Charles once said about a London development, but this time it applies to the landscape of Funchal. It is like, but worse, than the new Savoy (which was far to big and overpowering!) Don’t the authorities have a planning committee to consider how a balance between development and how it might detract from the overall Funchal environment?
    About 12 years ago there was a lovely Quinta (Quinta Palmeira -a restaurant) which was demolished and a non entity block of flats put in its place. Is there not a Portuguese equivalent of the UKs listing system to preserve the best of old heritage buildings?
    Developments, yes, but more thought should be given to how it impacts on the landscape of Funchal and how the two aspects can be aligned. The Dubai plan is just about making the most money out of the site. I know this site and have wondered how it would be developed, now I know!

  12. I don’t really like the color scheme at all, but the people here in this comment section are definitely going a bit far. It’s just one development in the center of Funchal, this won’t ruin Madeira, chill.

    I’m still appalled at how our government is handling this though. That area could’ve been made into a park or into public housing, but instead we get luxury apartments. We have a massive housing crisis, and our government is focusing on luxury apartments?? We will *never* improve with a mentality like this

  13. NOT the centre of Funchal … SÉ CATEDRAL is….or WAS = in November 1485, a new church started being built on the square Campo do Duque. This for a religious “coming together” place for the local population….Subsequently monetary greed decreed the need for the creeping concrete jungle conurbation that has sadly become the modern day Funchal….ruined. Glad we left x3 years ago.

Well this happens over the place even were I live in Sintra village that it is supposed be protected from concrete buildings one been built in old quinta the house been restored but they build in the grounds a massive home care building the looks like a jail it is the ugliest thing I seen almost near of the center . It was better if they did built with the old type of building to fit with old house .
