The ‘Dubai Madeira’ project, a luxury housing development that will be born in the west of Funchal, represents a private investment of 300 million euros, the largest ever made in the autonomous region, as announced today .

  1. … monstrous in so many ways… and the gullible locals will swallow the poisoned carrots whole…

    1. I’m in Madeira next week and look forward to speaking to some of the gullible locals as to what they think. Perhaps they see employment and opportunity. All bar one of the comments here are written from the view of the of the holiday maker. I’m sure Benidorm was an idyllic little fishing village in the past and the tourists, when new plans were announced, all made the sort of comments I read here, how it would spoil the resort and result in people not returning. Now look at it, how many jobs and amenities has it produced for the Spanish? Do you want to go back to the 60’s when I was told on my first visit Madeira had two exports, bananas and Madeirans.

  3. Well Excuse me. But W T F God is this all about? Dubai ? Again WTAF ?? Where are they building this? Did they put down banana trees and wine vines to do that as that idiot says urbanização? Oh my god. I am absolutely shocked ? this is an outrageous build. Why? Why? Someone please tell me that people spoke up against this horror ? This monstrosity. And please someone tell that CR not involved in this. What next? Build big Alaskan wood cabins up in the mountain Paul da Serra ? This is just an absolute shocker.

  4. Wow, I guess the developers think that foreigners will continue to flock to the island to scoop up such expensive real estate. What happens if there is a recession. I hope this doesn’t become a monstracity of unfinished buildings like some I have seen in some parts of the world.

  6. The article omits the basic facts. How many new accommodation blocks are proposed 14? 8 floors each of 120M2? About 450 new apartments. Those numbers dont add up to 300 million! The development would need to be 3 to 4 times larger.

    What infrastructure changes are anticipated? Is this accommodation expected to be sold to tourists? Or to Digital Nomads (including bankers). What impact will 4,000 or more high income people have on Funchal hospitality sector? What facilities are being included in the development? What about the impact on education? Health care?

    Rather than focus on the visual impact, the perhaps the politicians and people of Madeira need to look at the wider impacts of developments.

    It’s not clear to me why Digital Nomads want to live in city centre style developments – or whether the reality will be a migration away from cities for remote working at least for family units. This then begs the question about the balance between urban and rural housing demand over the next 50 years.

    1. A one bedroom apartment is almost half a million. Most properties are already sold, and will be for foreigners moving here. Digital Nomads come and go, they would only stay if they get residency or want to invest.

I think everyone can agree a lot of ego driven architecture that blends in like a sore thumb and an obvious lot of promises of financial gain and brown envelopes for the elite who own and run Madeira. As someone else said where is all the extra infrastructure, sewage treatment, water supply and even health and education facilities for this additional imported population, and who pays for it? Obviously the proposed new tunnels and motorway links are all part of a bigger plan to turn Funchal and I fear much of Southern Madeira into just another soulless concrete jungle for the mega rich. Where is the imagination and sympathy with the environment, no hint of “green building” or even much in the way of public open spaces just a forest of concrete and glass towers. What next, the appropriation of the open land on Praia Formosa and yet another hideous development there?

  8. Well at least our timeshare finishes hopefully before this materialises! What are the government of Madeira thinking of – oh no wait they allowed the monstrous Savoy Palace to go ahead which was supposed to blend in (sore thumb springs to mind)

  9. We first came to Madeira over 20 years ago. Loved the banana plantations, white cottages and rural outer Funchal. I know things modernise and move forward but this development along with other large hotels has removed the character of Funchal. Hopefully the island will be careful about future further development. The difficult landing of planes can have a huge impact on visitor numbers.

  10. There are so many empty developments, half finished and taking on water damage.
    It boggles the mind that this might become another one, and on such a massive scale.
    It is not just that there is a recession looming: construction materials will no doubt become much more expensive faster than was initially believed. They are already at an all time high.

    We lived for a time in one of the buildings directly behind this development. A BEAUTIFUL open field lay between us and Estrade Monumental below. It was a big part of the charm of the neighbourhood. We were so upset when it was thoroughly bulldozed a few years back, in preparation for construction… but then activity ceased and the vegetation grew back strong. Flowers everywhere. It was so easy to envisage a world in which such a space would be valued for what it is in its natural state, or modified to become communal gardens. At the worst, we hoped the new development would include gardens at its core.

    I share the disgust at the name of the development. It is a TERRIBLE branding mistake to allow the biggest investment in Madeira to be named this way: defined not by local character but by a far-away region known for petro-dollars, hubris, bling, and religious autocracy. I don’t think there is any hope in the face of such poor judgement and it leaves me feeling the future will hold more poor decisions. We were attracted to the remoteness, ruggedness and stirrings of a Green ethos in the region. This is so off-brand, it would be funny if it were not so tragic.

    Knowing this development was incoming, we left our home in Ajuda, Funchal with a sense that we were escaping with our memories intact. And we bid the field farewell, and wished for a miracle to save it in some way, or provide some measure of natural development for it.

  11. And the rich simply get richer. All this crap and never ending construction. But let’s NOT have a ferry, oh no. That could be useful.

  12. I agree – horrible! We have an apartment in Monumental Greenpark (Rua Vale da Ajuda), and Dubai in Madeira will completely block our views and those of everyone else in this and neighbouring blocks. Isn’t there supposed to be a regulation that new builds have to be lower than those that they will be in front of? Also, why Dubai in Madeira? Can’t people go to Dubai if they want Dubai?.

  15. I would like to know in what order they will be building. I know they have started on the first development but in what order will the other monstrosities be built and why do they have to be nine storeys high.

  16. So glad we came to your island before these developers did. Shame on the government for allowing it all.
