A walk I have only done once, but would probably do again at some point. You really get some great views that are changing all the time.

  2. I walked it in July 2013 with my then girlfriend plus a French woman and our guide. I recall it was astoundingly hot as well as spectacular. Needed headtorches in the tunnels.

  3. Did this over 30 years ago. Not fit enough now. Did see a right plonker on another page ask if it was suitable for their eight year old son.

  5. Tobi – yes but not since 2013. Out on the east path along the face of Pico Torres and back on the west (through the tunnels). Fabulous views. A proper hike. Not for the faint hearted or the ill prepared.

  6. We’ve always done this by car, rather than tour, so rather than doing the entire walk in one go, we’ve done it to the midway point from both directions as a there and back again hike

    So good to see the Teixeira cafe/restaurant up and working again, we were able to take our friends there in the summer, which was awesome

  7. Yes we did it some years ago. What an experience. We got there to see the sun rise and at that time we were the only ones there! Just magical

  8. It is a very nice hike, unfortunately the eastern part is closed since some years, so the way to and from Ruivo are the same now. Due to the big mess on the parking directly at Arieiro this summer, the limit of parking there is one hour now. There is another (dusty) parking one km before and a new path from there to Arieiro. As it is obligate to park there, if you stay longer than an hour, that lengthens the hike for about 2 km.
    The most interesting thing about the video is the date in the headline. It seems like they are coming from the future 🙂

    For me a very nice option is to go from Encumeada pass to Ruivo, it is less steep but much longer (11 km one way). And as your car stays at Encumeada, you have to return the same length. But the view is even better, you switch from north to south and back several times and the clouds are following you. Amazing.

  9. Yes I did a few times and like Brian Griffiths said well isnt for the faint hearted or the ill prepared. Like many the other hikes in the island all the careful is little . Feliz natal e ano .

  10. Yes, it’s a wonderful experience. You have to be in good shape to do it and enjoy it. Even then, winds are strong so if have a low body weight, you need some kind of stick or extra weight in some parts, I almost got blown over in one part.

  11. I did it with my wife in 2011 through the tunnels and before the landslip destroyed the path. This was a serious challenge to my vertigo problem. The second time was in 2015 when the steps were a serious challenge to my old legs.
