Flights Landing this Morning

All flights have so far landed this morning, a busy day for the Airport today with 55 arrivals expected.

The wind speeds look a little better than they were yesterday, but the gusts are still very strong, so complications could still happen throughout the day.

Some flights have been circling, but only waiting for there turn to land with 8 flights landing in a window of 30 minutes this morning.

  1. It appears the wind conditions have been especially problematic this week. What happens with all the Monday changeovers at hotels and vacation clubs if no flights for several days ?

    1. Most rooms will be empty because the occupants are on the same aircraft as the people waiting to board on their return journey. An earlier comment said people were staying overnight at the airport. I thought one of the passengers rights were they must be offered accomodation or pay any reasonable claim if the passenger was to find their own. I have been on three aborted landings in Madeira where we have flown and stopped overnight elsewhere, accommodation and food payed for by Easyjet.

    Unless it’s beyond the airline’s reasonable control, which presumably this is. Given the airport’s constraints and location this is an inevitable hazard. Particularly with visitors coming for shorter periods of time, it’s going to become an increasing issue. I know there’s supposed to be a new radar system at the airport, but the real problem is the fragility of alternative provision: Porto Santo isn’t going to help without more maritime capacity to Madeira and there are no passenger ferries further afield. Unfortunately travellers must put all their bags in one exit.
