Foreign residents in Madeira reach maximum in the last 15 years

As of December 31, 2022, the foreign population residing in the Region totaled 11,793 people, representing an increase of 13.3% compared to 2021 (+1,388 people), reveals the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM).

“Nationals from Venezuela (19.7%), the United Kingdom (11.8%), Germany (9.4%) and Brazil (9.2%) continue to represent the main foreign communities residing in the Region”, he adds still DREM.

It also reveals that German nationality showed the largest increase in the number of foreigners holding residence permits between 2021 and 2022, an increase of 24.5% (888 in 2021 to 1,106 in 2022), contributing 2.1 percentage points to the increase of 13.3% mentioned above.

It also says that the municipalities where the foreign population has the greatest weight in the total number of residents are: Calheta (10.7%), Porto Santo (8.5%), Ponta do Sol (6.5%) and Funchal (5. 7%).
