Tourists identified by the Forestry Police on the Areeiro trail

Classified trail is closed due to a landslide. Another 23 walking trails under the responsibility of the Institute of Forestry and Nature Conservation are also closed.

This Wednesday, the Forest Police identified a dozen tourists, of different nationalities, who were walking along the path that connects Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, when it has been closed due to a landslide since last Monday.

According to a note from the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN), “these actions of the Forest Police are legally supported by Regional Legislative Decree no. 24/2022/M, of December 19, which approves the Legal Regime of the Pedestrian Routes of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, and which provides that “access to temporarily or permanently closed pedestrian routes” constitutes an administrative offence.

“Despite the prohibition signs, it appears that some pedestrians do not respect the prohibition of Classified Routes that are under the management of the IFCN”, states the same note.

This infraction, according to the same diploma, is punishable by fines for an individual between 250 and 2,500 euros. Companies or other legal entities may face a fine of 500 to 10,000 euros.
