Unknown species of algae arrives on the coast of Madeira

The coastline of the island of Madeira has been experiencing, in recent days, an excessive accumulation of a species of algae that is still unknown and which could be harmful to ecosystems, JM found.

The situation is being monitored by the authorities and also by Mare Madeira, which is responsible for analyzing the algae. The accumulation of algae occurred this Thursday in Funchal and has already created an area of a few meters next to boats. According to an eyewitness, samples were collected from the sea next to the CR7 hotel, in Praça do Povo.

The same witness reveals that it could be a “sargasso” species, which comes from the Caribbean. Rui Teixeira, commander of the Madeira Maritime Zone, clarified to JM that “it is most likely algae”, a situation that has occurred a lot “in recent weeks”, with no knowledge of possible toxicity.

However, the commander of the National Maritime Authority (AMN) also referred us to the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Environment to find out about its “toxicity” and origin. In turn, the SRAA indicated that Mare Madeira is analyzing the phenomenon and analyzing whether or not there is toxicity from the algae.
