Albuquerque’s re-candidacy for the PSD/Madeira is an embarrassment for regional autonomy

The leader of the Liberal Initiative (IL), Rui Rocha, today considered that Miguel Albuquerque’s intention to re-apply for leadership of the PSD/Madeira is an embarrassment for regional autonomy and for the party.

“Miguel Albuquerque is not limited in his rights, but I believe it is an embarrassment to regional autonomy if he insists on his intention to run again and it is an embarrassment to the PSD”, said Rui Rocha, speaking to journalists in Funchal.

The IL leader commented on the fact that the president of PSD/Madeira revealed on Monday, after the meeting of the party’s Regional Political Commission, that he will “almost certainly” re-apply for the position, whose internal elections were scheduled for 21 of March.

“It is a right that you have, but I believe that it was important that political actors, those responsible for politics, realise that there is, as they sometimes say, a time for justice and the time at this moment for Miguel Albuquerque is the time for justice, it is time to defend yourself”, he considered, during a pre-election campaign action at Mercado dos Lavradores, in Funchal.

In Rui Rocha’s opinion, the instructional decision “is precarious, provisional” and “does not affect the essence of the process”.

Madeira is experiencing a political crisis resulting from the dismissal of Miguel Albuquerque, after being named a defendant as part of a process investigating suspected corruption in the archipelago, which led to the fall of its executive, from the PSD/CDS- coalition.
