German oceanographic vessel in Funchal bay for the first time

The RV Maria S. Merian, Germany’s most recent and well-equipped oceanographic vessel, is in the Port of Funchal for the first time.

This German research vessel, named after the naturalist and illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian, remains in the Region until next Friday, February 9th.

This one has 94.80 mt, a crew of 21 people and capacity for up to 22 scientists.

It should be noted that, since March 2006, Germany has operated three other research vessels of the same class as the RV Maria S. Merian, but “none of which are as well equipped”.

It should be noted that Pontinha is still home to the usual visitor Mein Schiff 1, who arrived last night. The ship carrying 2,943 passengers and 1,022 crew only leaves Madeira tomorrow, at 2 pm, heading to La Palma, after a 39-hour layover.

This itinerary began last Sunday, in Gran Canaria, with stops in Madeira, La Palma, Tenerife, Fuerteventura and again, Gran Canaria, where the cruise ends on February 11th.
