  1. Do you think the higher ups in Madeira’s government read Madeira Island News? Or are at least aware of its contents?

  2. Sadly this problem is not confined to Madeira, but is a consequence of raising an entire generation of ‘entitled’ youth whose parents didn’t deem potty-training necessary.
    We encouraged hordes of these slobs to Visit Scotland, where they soon discovered that you don’t have to waste time looking for lavatories, when people’s front gardens or lay-bys are much easier to access.
    Gives you time to look for somewhere to dump the contents of your camper-van toilet.

    2. Correct analysis of the problem. And: as foreigners we should not compare the local government, which was just reelected, with „sh#t“.

  4. Well it is a problem not only in Madeira but also in mainland Portugal and other places if people should buried the paper at least this way wasn’t visible at all . Not giving any excuses to no one or even saying that this is acceptable or even correct people should be ashamed for this type of behaviour . In Sintra when hiking I collect many times the plastic bottles and glass it is a disgrace .

  5. Es ist so widerlich. Warum schmeißt Ihr diese ignoranten Menschen nicht von Eurer wunderschönen Insel. Wir kommen seit 20 Jahren zum Wandern und tragen unseren Müll im Rucksack zurück. Es wird überall wild gezeltet. Warum stehen darauf nicht hohe Srafen???? Das könnte am schon in großen Plakaten am Flughafen bekannt geben!!! Diesen Massentourismus, wie er seit Jahren auf Madeira ist, kann nur zerstören!!!

  7. That is disgusting. How can tourists destroy beautiful habitats like that. They should bring some sort of carrier to put their dirty toilet paper in and dispose of it when they return home/hotel.

    1. True they have to pick up there dog poop and place in a poop bag why not do it for them self,s …. all it takes is a space for a small sandwich bag … how hard is that ….. and maybe women should learn to shake it .. lol

  8. It’s bad now, wait till all the tourists from The Canaries and The Balearic Islands start coming!! The government needs to act now and reduce the number of tourist flights, rental car companies and all this building work. The Canaries encouraged this type of tourist for years, and is now paying the price. I’m not saying this disgusting behaviour isn’t happening all over the world, because it is, perhaps some serious kind of publicity at the airport and in hotels would make some of them think? Huge fines, but how do you catch them, or action the fines? Surely if you are caught short on a walk you would bag it and take it away, just as is expected with dog poo. They go on these walks prepared with toilet tissue, obviously intending to defecate outside, so why not bag it and take it away. What kind of people are they? absolutely disgusting! Who thought the lovely walks in Madeira would need to provide some kind of biodegradable human poo bags and teach people how to behave in the countryside. Even if they did bag it, they would hang it on a tree and leave it there. What a sorry state of affairs.
    We’ve had a holiday home here for 20 years and are so sad to see this beautiful Island and it’s people treated like this. The government are encouraging all these people to come though, without any infrastructure, i.e., few public toilets, dreadful refuse disposable everywhere, unsuitable roads and parking for all the hire cars especially In the mountains and have to take responsibility and act now. Some national parks in USA make tourists park in designated car parks and are only allowed into the parks by buying tickets on special limited busses. They also employ uniformed rangers. This might be the only way to reduce the number of people on the lavadas and they could be played videos with rangers explaining why it has become necessary and hand them poo bags. I know this will never happen of course! I hope a solution is found before it’s too late.

  9. Same people probably complain about dog mess. No hardship in putting the paper in a plastic bag until they reach a bin.

  10. If we ask the government to open the toilets and put that request in a brown envelope stuffed with cash, maybe that would get something done

  11. Isn’t this typical of 3rd world banana republic governments? Someone actually thinks it’s normal for toilet facilities to open at 9am, when the area is occupied several hours earlier? Like people don’t need to do their business any earlier? I think the entitlement in this case is not so much the eurotrash that are soiling the area, but rather some local entitled officials. People hat come here on holidays aren’t given the heads up in the brochures to please bring your own tp and plastic bags. Maybe a little blame on both sides.

  13. It doesn’t matter if the litterers are tourists or locals, if they would not do this at home why should anyone consider it fine to do it elsewhere, common sense/decency should prevail.

  14. Nothing to do with the Governmment it is the people conscience and behaviour that are incapable of taking responsibility and culpability for their behaviour when doing this type of things . And anyone seeing this should report to IFCN Madeira ifcn.madeira.gov.pt (351) 291 145590. Don’t aspect the Governmment or even the IFCN be conscience of people .
