6 kilometer long traffic queue on the expressway

Traffic nightmare.

Vehicle skidded off the road at the entrance to the Pinheiro Grande tunnel and caused a traffic jam that extended all the way to the Santo António junction.

A vehicle skidded off the road late this Friday afternoon, near the entrance to the Pinheiro Grande tunnel – in the Funchal/Machico direction – and ended up crashing into a wall.

The accident is causing major constraints to car circulation, during rush hour, triggering a long queue of traffic that extends over more than six kilometers – more precisely up to the Santo António interchange – therefore generating a huge traffic jam.

In turn, the driver of the car did not show any injuries and, as such, none of the Funchal fire brigades – both Firefighters and Volunteers – ended up being called.

The Via Litoral team is in charge of monitoring traffic at the site, as vehicle circulation has been limited to one of the two lanes until the vehicle is removed.
