As our President is already back on Porto Santo, enjoying his holiday, we can only hope that the fires are more under control here.
The President of the Assembly of the Azores, Luís Garcia, today expressed solidarity with the population of Madeira and considered that the fires require “rigorous and urgent reflection”, highlighting the “social, economic and social impacts” of the fires.
In a statement, the president of the Azorean parliament expressed “solidarity with the population affected on the island of Madeira by the fires that broke out in the mountains of Ribeira Brava and in the municipalities of Câmara de Lobos and Ponta do Sol, on the Paul da Serra plateau”.
Luís Garcia reveals that he called the president of the Regional Assembly of Madeira, José Manuel Rodrigues, to convey “words of support addressed to the population of the affected areas and to the institutions that are on the front line of rescue and support for the victims”.
For the president of the Regional Assembly of the Azores, the fires require “rigorous and urgent reflection”.
“We know that these phenomena have a devastating impact on the lives of people, whether socially, economically or emotionally, leaving indelible marks on their history and their communities,” highlights the Social Democrat, quoted in the press release.
Luís Garcia wishes all the families and professionals who are in the theatre of operations “a quick return home”, remembering the 14 Azorean firefighters who travelled to Madeira to help fight the flames.
